인도철학과 해탈의 관계를 둘러싼 한 논쟁

국문 초록

이 연구는 인도철학과 해탈의 관계를 중심으로 포터와 다야 크리쉬나 및 모 한티 사이에 일어났던 논쟁을 다룬 것이다. 1963년에 출간된 그의 Presuppositions of India s Philosophies에서 포터는 인도철학과 해탈이 필수적으로 연관되어 있고, 해탈에 관한 의심의 제거를 위해 사변철학이 등장했으며, 현대 인도의 철학자들은 서양적인 정향을 지양하고, 고전 인도철학들(darsanas)을 현 대적으로 유관하게 되살려야 한다고 주장했다. 이에 대해 다야는 “진정한 철학”의 입장에서 포터의 그러한 주장들을 정면으로 부정하고 논박했다. 이제 포터는 다야가 철학을 개념적 분석으로 보면서, 해탈의 추구를 표현하는 많은 문헌 근거들을 무시하고 있다고 다시 논박했다. 나중에 모한티는 인도철학이 느슨한 체계들이고, 명시적이거나 암시적으로 해탈과 연관되어 있다는 입장을 취했다. 그 이후 다야는 포터가 진지한 논쟁에서 물러났다고 보아, 인도철학의 대안적 전망을 명료화하는데 주력한 것으로 보인다. 인도철학을 해탈만을 추구하는 체계나 철학만으로 한정하는 것은 적절하지 않다. 해탈도 초월성과 내재성을 상보적으로 갖추고, 더 완전한 자유를 향한 변증 법적 운동을 한다고 볼 수 있겠다. 인도철학의 체계들은 해탈과 불가결하게 관계되는 것도, 별 관계가 없는 것도 아니다. 느슨한 체계들로서의 인도철학이 명시적으로나 암묵적으로 해탈의 기획을 받아들이고 있다는 모한티의 견해는 적절하다. 이 논쟁에서는 의사소통의 문제도 드러났지만, 결과적으로 세 철학자는 자신의 철학을 상보적으로 더욱 발전시켜가고 있는 듯이 보인다. 이제 인 도철학을 ‘인도’ 만이 아니라 우리의 전통과 현대와의 만남, 그리고 성찰적이고 다른 분야들과도 연계되며, 자유를 포함한 진실과 가치들의 자유로운 탐구로서 발전시킬 필요가 있겠다.

영문 초록

This is an inquiry into a controversy over the relationship between Indian philosophy and moksa or freedom which arose between Karl Potter, Daya Krishna, and J. N. Mohanty. In 1963 through his Presuppositions of India s Philosophies Potter asserted that Indian philosophies as darsanas were integrally related to moksa, and speculative philosophy came in an effort to remove doubts concerning moksa. He also insisted that today s Indian philosophers should overcome the current Western orientations, and make classical Indian philosophical systems relevant to their living problems. In his standpoint of philosophy proper , Daya then straightforwardly denied and repudiated all these assertions. Then Potter criticized that conceiving of philosophy as philosophical analysis Daya ignores a very large portion of those texts which express moksa-seeking. Later Mohanty took a moderate position between them that Indian philosophies are loose systems, and they are explicitly or implicitly related to moksa. Eventually, judging that Potter opted out of serious debate, Daya then seems to concentrate his efforts on articulating an alternative perspective of Indian philosophy. The crux of my understanding and estimate of this controversy is as follows: First of all, whether Indian philosophy is spiritual or not is not a genuine issue. Neither restricting Indian philosophy to solely moksa-seeking darsanas nor to philosophy proper is appropriate. Moksa as freedom can be seen to have transcendence and immanence as its integral aspects and also to be in constantly dialectical movement towards complete freedom. Indian philosophical systems are neither integrally related nor unrelated to moksa. Mohanty s view that Indian philosophy, as loose systems, explicitly or implicitly accept the founding project of moksa is plausible. This controversy revealed also certain problems of communication between them, but these would be utilizable as impetus for further development of their views and exchange. Subsequently the three philosophers appear to supplement each other s philosophy and to develop one s own further through these debates. Now it appears to be the best task for us to develop Indian philosophy, as an encounter between not only Indian but also our local-and-global traditions and modernity, as a creative enterprise with reflexivity and open for collaboration with the other disciplines, and also as a free inquiry into truth and values including freedom.
