한국 사교육시장 전개의 역사와 그 의미

국문 초록

본 연구는 사교육문제를 완화시키고 미래사회에서 사교육이 국가교육 및 경제발전에 기여할 수 있는 방안을 마련하기 위해서 사교육시장이 전개된 역사를 고찰하였다. 사교육시장의 전개를 종합한 결과, 첫째, 우리나라에서 사교육시장은 개화기이후∼일제강점기 즈음 형성되었으며, 도약기, 성장기, 침체기, 재도약기를 거치고 현재는 유지기인 것으로 나타났다. 사교육시장은 시간이 지나면서 유형, 주요설립자, 규모·형태가 다양해지고, 교육대상이 확대되었으며, 교육 계열과 내용이 세분화되었고, 그에 따라 교육적·경제적·사회적 기능과 역할이 확대되었다. 둘째, 성인과 학생을 대상으로 하는 사교육은 모두 교육적·경제적·사회적 배경으로 인하여 세 차례의 붐을 형성하였다. 셋째, 사교육에 대한 우려와 비평, 부정적 인식이 지속되고 있다. 이상의 내용은 사교육시장의 규모와 영향력이 단기간에 크게 줄지 않을 것을 보여주는 동시에 사교육이 양산하는 다양한 문제를 완화하기 위해서 지속적인 노력이 필요하다는 것을 의미한다.

영문 초록

This purpose of this study is to examine the history of private tutoring needs to be examined first to mitigate private tutoring problems and draw up measures to contribute to national education system and economic development in the future. The analysis shows that the private tutoring market was formed around the Enlightened Period and Japanese Colonial Period in Korea, and now arrives at maintenance stage, going through the take-off, growth, recession, and recovery stage. The private tutoring market has seen a rise in its types, principal founders, sizes, and forms, leading to the expansion of students as well as subdivision of curriculum and contents. As a result, the role and function of private tutoring has increased in education, economy and the society. Secondly, private tutoring market targeting adults and young students made three time booms affected by educational, economic, social circumstances. Thirdly, there still remains negative perceptions, criticism, and concern toward private tutoring. The above demonstrates that the size and influence of private tutoring market would not be reduced significantly and it also signifies that persistent effort is required to reduce various problems caused by private tutoring.
