국문 초록

더 많은 부와 재산을 소유하려는 열망은 불행으로 이어지기 쉽다. 물질주의적 가치와 욕구가 강한 사람들은 덜 물질주의적인 사람들에 비하여 더 많은 불안 중상을 호소하고，우울증에 더 걸리기 쉽고, 더 자주 신체적 불편을 보고하였다. 따라서 물질주의는 행복을 약속하지만 실은 긴장과 스 트 레 스 를 만든다. 더 많이 소유하고 소비하려는 욕구의 증가는 사람들의 불안으로 이어진다. 물질주의는 사랑，자존감, 능력，또는 자율에서의 불확실성을 가진 사람들사이에서 자라기 쉽다. 최근，많은 연구들이 불안감，낮은 자존감，낮은 대인관계，그리고 자율과 자유의 결여를 물질주의 추구 밑에 깔린 기제들로 제안 하여 왔지만，한국에서 고유한 현상인 물질주의와 관련된 성형문제，과소비,명 품 ，미신 의존 문제들을 포함한 포괄적인 연구가 필요하다. 아울러 물질주의와 행복을 매개하는 변인들을 망라한 구조방정식의 정립이 필요하다.

영문 초록

Aspiring to have greater wealth or more possession is likely to be associated with increased personal unhappiness. People with strong materialistic values and desires report more symptoms of anxiety, are at greater risk for depression, and experience more frequent somatic irritation than those who are less materialistic. Thus materialism, although promising happiness, actually creates strain and stress. Enhanced desires or needs to have more or consume more are deeply and dramatically connected with feelings of personal insecurity. Materialism tends to ripen best among people who feel uncertain about matters of love or poor relationship, self-esteem, competence, or freedom or autonomy. Recently many literatures highlight the underlying mechanisms and mediated variables connecting materialism and happiness in Korea. More researches are necessary to set up a structural equation model compromising mediating variables or underlying mechanisms suggested by previous studies and extending to plastic surgery, overconsumption, brand name products, and superstitious dependent, which are some aspects of image enhancing materialism in Korea.
