둘째자녀 출산 포기과정에 관한 질적연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 둘째 자녀에 대한 출산계획을 포기하는 요인과 과정을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 총 16명의 심층면접을 실시한 결과, 한 자녀를 둔 가정의 둘째자녀 출산계획 포기와 관련된 요인은 첫째자녀 양육부담과 양육지원 원조체계 부족이었다. 양육부담은 경제적 어려움을 포함하여 육체적, 정신적인 어려움까지 포괄한다. 접근성 및 지속성을 포함한 양육지원체계의 질적인 특성이 둘째출산 포기와 관련된 중요한 요인이었다. 한 자녀를 둔 가정의 둘째자녀 출산계획 포기과정은 세 단계로 구분되었다. 양육과 씨름하는 시기, 양육의 기쁨을 느끼고 형제/자매의 필요성을 인식하는 시기, 양육의 어려움과 지원체계 부족으로 인한 둘째자녀 계획을 포기하는 시기이다. 특히 양육의 기쁨을 느끼고 형제/자매의 필요성을 인식하는 시기는 둘째자녀 출산을 장려하는 정책과 프로그램의 개입시기 에 대한 중요한 시사점을 제공한다. 둘째자녀 출산계획을 포기하는 집단은 확실하게 포기하기, 미루기, 회피하기 유형으로 구분되었다. 이는 후속출산을 포기하는 집단이 동질적이지 않음을 의미하며, 후속출산을 장려하는 정책대상자로, 확실하게 포기한 유형보다는 미루기와 회피하기 유형이 더 적합함을 시사한다. 본 연구는 위의 연구결과를 바탕으로 둘째자녀 출산율을 증진시키기 위한 정책적 개입의 종류, 시기 및 대상집단에 대한 정책적 시사점과 후속연구를 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study explores the process how married women and their spouse having one child give up their intentions of having a second child. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 people from one child families and 5 people from two children families. The interviews cover the child rearing experiences and the second child intentions of the participants. A finding reveals that the second birth intention is influenced by their experience of first child-rearing burdens and available support systems alleviating the burdens. Especially, the monetary concerns as well as physical and psychological burdens are important factors influencing the second child birth plan of the participants. The high quality of child rearing support systems including accessibility and stability reduces the burdens. The process of giving up a second birth plan takes three categorized stages: Struggling stage, Enjoying stage and Giving up stage. The presence of the enjoying stage implies that there might be a critical time period to enhance second birth intention. The people who give up the second birth are not homogeneous. Three types of groups are classified in this study: Abandonment group, Postponement group, and Avoidance group. This finding implies that effective targeting groups on fertility policies are those who postpone or avoid the second child birth. Policy implications are suggested to increase second child fertility based on the results of this study.
