A대학의 교수-학생 상호작용과 그 문화에 관한 질적 사례연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 지방 소재 중소형 사립대학에서 교수와 학생의 활발한 상호작용이 하나의 문화로 자리 잡으면서 나타난 질적 현상을 탐색한 사례 연구이다. 학생과 교수 개인은 물론 대학 차원에서 교수와 학생의 교류 문화가 제도적으로 성숙해 가는 과정을 단계별로 살펴보고, 각 단계별로 나타난 특징과 이를 위한 제도적, 실천적 노력 및 현실적 문제에 대하여 고찰하였다. 사례 대학의 교수-학생 상호작용 문화는 크게 발아기, 발전기, 정착기를 거치면서 진화하고 있었다. 발아기에는 기존의 관련 제도를 발전적으로 계승하는 것과 동시에 이를 더욱 활성화하기 위한 정책적 움직임이 활발하였다. 총장의 리더십이 중요한 요인으로 드러났으며, 교수와 학생의 자발적인 참여를 이끌어내는 것이 관건이었다. 둘째, 발전기에는 교수-학생 상호작용을 지원하는 제도와 프로그램의 체계성 및 정합성을 구축하는 것이 중요한 이슈였다. 사례 대학에서는 교수-학생 상호작용이 발전기에 접어들면서 한층 참여율이 증가하고 실질적으로 보편화되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 학생들은 교수들과 함께 다양한 프로그램에 참여하면서 대학에 대한 소속감을 함양하고 있었으며, 학습동기와 전공실력을 높이면서 자기 계발에 대한 노력을 확대하는 정서적, 사회적 경험을 하고 있었다. 마지막으로 정착기에서는 지속적인 교수-학생 상호작용이 하나의 문화로 자리 잡고 이를위해 교류와 소통의 장을 정례화하는 현상이 발견되었다. 이 단계에서는 교수가 독립적이고 자율적으로 학생과 교류할 수 있도록 교수의 위상을 담보하는 노력을 펼치고 있었다. 한편 대학의 혁신을 주도하는 집단과 일반 교수 및 학생들 사이에서 나타나는 갈등이나 마찰을 해결해 나가는 것도 중요한 과제로 드러났다

영문 초록

This case study examined interpersonal and organizational dynamics that were accompanied with the development of student-faculty interaction as a culture in one university. The study aimed to look into the evolutionary and institutional development of a culture of student-faculty interaction, with a close look at the characteristics of each of the developmental stages, institutional efforts, and barriers in practices in the university. The study found that student-faculty interaction in the case institution had developed in the following stages: embryo, developing, and matured stages. First, during the embryo stage, the institution made efforts to further develop existing systems and create the new programs to promote an institution-wide student-faculty interaction. The leadership of the university President was found to be one of the most important factors in implementing the programs and this developed the culture of student-faculty interaction. Another key issue was to have both student and faculty willingly engaged in the programs and thus the process of interactions. Second, during the developing stage, building institutional structures to support student-faculty interaction was found to be an important factor. During this stage, the participation in the programs of both student and faculty had substantially been increased. Interacting with the faculty, students were found to experience a variety of emotional and social development that led to institutional commitment, improvement of academic motivation and knowledge, and development of their own talent. Lastly, in relation to the matured stage, the systemization of the programs for student-faculty interactions was found to be a key issue. In this stage, the case institution has made an effort to secure and promote the status of the faculty so that they further develop interaction with students. During this stage, another important issue was to resolve the problem of conflicts between the head quarter of the institution seeking for innovation and the faculty having a tendency of resisting change or not adapting to change as quickly as desired.
