국문 초록

이 연구는 저출산 정책이 개입할 여지가 큰 자녀 출산 연기형 무자녀 기혼 남성의 관점에서 출산 연기의 배경, 자녀에 대한 태도, 저출산 정책에 대한 요구를 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 특히 본 연구는 기존의 출산 결정과 관련된 선행연구에서 소외되어 온 무자녀 ‘남성’의 관점에 주목했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 연구의 자료는 결혼한 지 3년이 경과하였으며 자녀 갖기를 일시적으로 연기하고 있다고 보고한 만 50세 미만의 무자녀 남성 6명과의 심층면접을 통하여 수집되었으며, 주제 분석법으로 분석되었다. 첫째, ‘출산 연기의 배경’으로는 경제적 문제, 주거 등 안정된 생활 기반 부족, 부모로서의 책임에 대한 부담감, 출산 연기에대한 배우자의 의사와 자녀 양육에 대한 배우자의 기대, 주변의 무자녀 부부를 통한 불안감의 해소가 주제로 도출되었다. 둘째, ‘자녀에 대한 태도’의 하위주제로는 당연히 자녀를 가져야 한다는 보편적 자녀 출산관, 자녀에 대한 긍정적 태도, 부모의 조부모됨과 연결된 존재로서의 자녀, 높은 출산 의향, 출산을 연기하고 있는 상황에 대한 아쉬움이 도출되었다. 셋째, ‘정책 요구도’ 관련 주제로는 사회 문제로서의 저출산에 대한 인식, 경제적 지원 및 맞벌이 지원 정책에 대한 요구, 현실적으로 도움이 되는 정책의 필요성, 사회 구조의 근본적 변화에대한 요구가 도출되었다. 연구결과를 토대로 남녀가 출산 결정과 자녀 양육을 공유할 수 있도록하는 저출산 정책, 부모됨을 통한 행복 추구권을 지원하는 정책을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to understand the perspectives of childless married men who have delayed having a child. Specifically, we explored the background of postponing parenthood, attitudes toward having a child, and opinions on fertility policies. Delayed parenthood in Korea is an important topic in the context of the extremely low birth rate. Listening to childless men’s voices is meaningful because they have been excluded in the literature on decisions about childbirth. Our data were collected from six in-depth interviews with childless Korean men who had been married for three years or more, who had delayed parenthood but hoped to have a child in the future, and who were younger than the age of 50. The themes around the background of men choosing to postpon parenthood were (a) economic problems, (b) unmet living standards including insecure housing, (c) burden of parental responsibilities, (d) the wife’s opinion about childbirth and expectations for childrearing, and (e) relieving pressure of having a child due to other childless couples. As for the childless men’s attitudes toward having a child, the emerged themes were (a) parenthood as a normative and taken-for-granted life event, (b) positive attitudes toward having a child, (c) the importance of their parents’ becoming grandparents, (d) aspirations for having a child, and (e) regret about having delayed parenthood. The themes related to fertility policies were (a) the low fertility rate as a social problem, (b) the need for economic support and support for dual earning couples, (c) request for meeting real-life needs, and (d) the need for ultimate changes in the social structure. We suggest that public polices should better support gender equality in caring for children and value citizens’ right to pursue happiness by having a child
