국문 초록

본 연구는 상대적 소득이 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향을 알아봄으로서 이론적․정책적 함의를 도출하려한다. 이 를 위해 한국노동패널조사 1~15차년도 조사자료를 사용하여 패널분석을 실시하였으며 결과는 다음과 같다. 가계가 속한 준거집단의 평균소득은 삶의 만족도에 정적인 반응을 보였다. 그러나 가계소득과 준거집단평균소득의 차이는 삶의 만족도에 비대칭적 반응을 보였다. 즉, 가계소득이 준거집단평균소득보다 많은 집단은 차이가 커질수록 삶의 만족도가 증가한 반면, 가계소득이 준거집단평균소득보다 적은 집단은 차이가 커질수록 삶의 만족도가 낮아지면서 보다 민감한 반응을 보였다. 이러한 결과로부터, 가계는 준거집단평균소득의 증가를 향후 가계소득 증가의 신호로 인식한 반면, 가계소득과 준거집단평균소득의 차이로부터 상대적 박탈감을 느끼는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 소비자 효용이 가계소득에 의해 독립적으로 결정되기 보다는 상대적 관계 속에서 상호의존적으로 결정된다는 것을 지지하며, 가계복지정책에 있어서 상대적 접근이 요구됨을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study presents theoretical and policy implications by examining the effects of relative income on life satisfaction. A panel data analysis is conducted by using data from Years 1 to 15 of the Korean Labor & Income Panel Study (KLIPS), and the results are as follows. The average income of the reference group including households shows a positive effect on life satisfaction. However, the gap between household income and the average income of the reference group shows an asymmetrical response to life satisfaction. In other words, life satisfaction increases as the gap grows in the group where household income is greater than the average income of the reference group, whereas life satisfaction decreases as the gap grows in the opposite case. This finding suggests that while households perceive an increase in the average income of the reference group as a sign of a future increase in household income, they also feel relative deprivation from the gap between household income and the average income of the reference group. The findings of this research support the fact that relative income, which is traditionally treated as an externality in consumer utility theory, must become an endogenous variable and imply a need for a relative approach to household welfare policies.
