영문 초록

This essay is to appraise J. Gresham Machen (1881-1937) as a New Testament scholar with special reference to his magnum opus, The Virgin Birth of Christ (1930), not witho ut briefl y takin g his life and other writings into a ccou nt. After delineating th e academic bac kground, structure, and main ar gum ent reflected in the 1930's work along with other re ference, I present four ch aracteristics as for his bi blical approach to the New Te stamen t: (a) historical-scientific, (b) evidential-apologetic,(c) presupposition al-apolo getic, and (d) ecclesia stico-practical approach. On the basis of this obs ervati on, I suggest to char acterize Gre sha m Mach en not only as a 'thoroughgoin g' New Testament sch olar and reformed Christian apologist, but also as a consistent Presbyterian minister and, above all, a fa ithful 'C hr istia n'.
