백범 김구의 교육활동에 대한 연구

국문 초록

백범 김구(1876∼1949)는 흔히 독립운동가, 정치지도자, 자주통일운동가, 민족주의자, 인류평화 운동가, 그리고 혁명가 등으로 알려져 있지만, 독립과 통일을 위해 노력해 온 교육문화운동가이기도 하다. 그는 1905년 을사늑약 이후부터 국권회복을 위한 교육사업의 중요성을 강조하였고, 본격적인 교육운동가로서의 삶을 살기 시작했다. 또한 자신이 직접 세운 학교나 독립운동 동지들이 세운 학교와 사범강습소에서 학생들을 가르쳤고, 특히 신민회 시기에는 황해도 학무총감을 맡아 황해도 일대를 순회하며 각종 연설회나 강연회, 환등회를 통해 국민의식 개조, 구국계몽을 위한 교육을 실시한 바도 있다. 광복 이후에는 건국에 필요한 인재양성을 위해 건국실천원양성소를 설립하여 9기에 걸쳐 약 800여 명의 인재를 양성하였고, 1949년에는 북한 실향민, 전쟁 이재민과 부모 잃은 고아들을 대상으로 백범학원, 창암학원을 세워 무상으로 교육을 실시하기도 하였다. 하지만, 독립과 통일을 위해 노력해 온 백범이 교육문화운동가이기도 했다는 사실은 상대적으로 덜 알려져 있는 것이 사실이다. 따라서 본 연구는 백범의 교육실천과 교육사상을 보다 폭넓게 이해하기 위하여 백범의 교육활동에 대한 연구의 폭을 특정시기에 한정하지 않고, 그가 교육에 본격적인 관심을 가진 청소년기에서부터 사망할 때까지 전 시기로 확대시키고자 하였다. 그리고 이러한 연구를 통해 백범의 교육실천과 교육사상이 갖는 교육적 가치와 현대적 시사점을 상고(詳考)하는 데 본 연구의 목적이 있다.

영문 초록

Although Baekbeom Kim Gu (1876∼1949) had been well known as an independence activist, a political leader, a self-reliant unification activist, a nationalist, a world peace campaigner and a revolutionist, he was also an educational and cultural activist who endeavored to achieve national independence and unification. After the conclusion of Eulsa Neukyak in 1905, he emphasized the importance of education for restoring national rights and lived the life of a full-fledged educational activist. He taught students at schools and private educational institutes he or his fellow independence activists established. In particular, in the period of New People's Association (Sinminhoe), he served as a superintendent of educational affaires of Hwanghae-do, and made a circuit of the whole area of Hwanghae-do and practiced education for national conscious reconstruction and national salvation enlightenment via various speech meetings, lectures and lantern slide presentations. After the restoration of independence, he established a Nation Founding Practician (Geonguk Silcheonwon) Training Institute to train human resources for the founding of nation, and trained about 800 talented people in 9 sessions. And in 1949, he established Baekbeom Educational Institute and Changam Educational Institute for displaced North Korean people, war victims and orphans and carried out free education for them. Nevertheless, the fact that Baekbeom, who endeavored to achieve independence and unification, was an educational and cultural activist, is relatively less known in reality. In this regard, in order to understand Baekbeom’s educational practice and philosophy more broadly, the width of study on Baekbeom’s educational activities was not limited to a certain period of time, but extended it to the period of his adolescence in which he came to be interested in education fully to his death. The purpose of this study was to examine the educational values and present-day implications of Baekbeom Kim Gu’s educational practice and philosophy in detail.
