고전소설에 나타난 이비고사(二妃故事)의 변용과 의미

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 이비고사가 구체적인 사건으로 서사화되는 고전소설을 대상으로 서사구조와 서술의 측면에서 이비고사가 변용되는 양상을 찾아내고 그 의미를 논의하는 것이다. 이비고사는 고전소설 속에서 고난에 대한 조력과 천정원리를 구현하는 서사로 구조화된다. 이것은 <이비전설>에서 나타나는 이비가 가진 고난에 대한 조력자의 의미를 수용하면서도 고전소설 속에서 이비가 천정원리를 전달하는 중계자로서의 의미를 가질 수 있도록 변용한 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 변용은 당대 소설 향유층의 윤리의식, 신념체계를 보다 공고하게 하기 위한 방편으로 이비고사를 활용한 것이다. 소설 향유층이 가진 윤리적 기대지평이 고전소설 속에서 이비모티프를 만들고 유사한 서사적 삽화와 기능을 가진 서사구조로 고전소설 속에 산입시키는 것이다. 서술의 측면에서도 일정한 유형적 서술을 발견할 수 있는데 비애에 대한 공감적 서술과 역사와 허구적 현부와 열녀에 대한 재현적 서술이 그것이다. 비애에 대한 공감적 서술은 원텍스트인 <이비전설>을 환기하는 구체적 사건을 서술하고, 자연물에 비애의 감정을 이입하여 인간의 공감을 불러일으키는 것이다. 비애에 대한 공감적 서술은 고전소설 전반에서 여성의 비애를 표현하는 서술방식을 마련하여 여성의 감성적 서술세계를 구축한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다. 역사와 허구적 현부와 열녀에 대한 재현적 서술은 이비를 비롯한 역사적 현부와 열녀, 소설 속 허구적 현부와 열녀의 스토리를 소설 속에 그려내는 것이다. 이 서술은 고전소설 텍스트에서 <이비전설>의 내용과 의미를 충분히 재현한다는 점에서는 이비고사를 수용한 것이고, <이비전설>에서 나타지 않았던 역사적 현부와 열녀, 소설 속의 허구적 현부와 열녀를 등장시켜 그들의 이야기를 새롭게 재현한다는 점에서는 변용의 측면이라고 할 수 있다. 역사와 허구적 현부와 열녀에 대한 재현적 서술은 여성 독자층이 가지고 있는 고전 텍스트와 당대 소설 텍스트에 대한 지식과 교양을 소통하고 고양시키는 기능을 한다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to discuss the significance of IbiGosa[二妃故事] in Korean classical novels that adopt the IbiGosa[二妃故事] as a narrative plot, viewed from the aspects of narrative structure and description. In Korean classical novels, IbiGosa[二妃故事] are structuralized into a narrative form to embody messages of the Helper and the Heavenly Design towards suffering. This manifests that the IbiGosa [二妃故事] accept the message of the Helper in the suffering the Ibi''s go through in IbiJeonseol[二妃傳說], while there is an element of transformation in the meaning of Ibi''s as messengers conveying the principle of Heavenly Design. This transformation is geared as a way to build up the ethics and faith system of the novel readers of the time. One may argue that the ethics of the novel readers form the Ibi motif in classical novels, adopting a narrative structure with similar narrative illustrations and functions in classical novels. As to description, certain descriptive patterns are identified including the sympathetic description of grief and representational description of virtuous women in history and fictions. As to the sympathetic description of grief, the stories describe concrete events that revive the IbiJeonseol[二妃傳說], importing the emotional pathos into natural objects to evoke sympathy. The sympathetic description of grief is significant in that it prepares the narrative method of describing female sadness and builds up the descriptive world of female sensitivity in general classical novels. As to the representational description of historical and fictive virtuous women, stories of virtuous women in history and fictions are represented in these novels. That the novels contain enough representation of the content and meanings of IbiJeonseol[二妃傳說] in classical novels can be interpreted as acceptance of IbiGosa[二妃故事]. And as the representation of the stories of fictive virtuous women is found in renewed plots, the aspect can be viewed as that of transformation. The representational description of historical and fictive virtuous women is significant in that it contributes itself to the communication and elevation of the knowledge and culture about the text of the classics and the novels of the time.
