영문 초록

The Middle East is fraught with environmental disputes. The lack of environmental ethics in the Middle Eastern countries deepens the regional crises over the management of natural resources. The primary cause of such disputes is the dominant concept of development that accelerates materialist, nationalist, and anthropocentric approaches toward environmental issues. As Islam is the most dominant religion in the Middle East, environmental ethics rooted in the Qur’an may work as a point of convergence for all the countries in the region (with the exception of Israel) to reach a consensus on environmental issues. Qur’anic environmental ethics can play an important role in this regard and bring necessary changes in Muslim life at individual, national, and regional levels, at least in the Middle East. In the hope that Qur’anic environmental ethics will be taken as a common heritage by the Middle Eastern countries, eventually helping reduce the scope of the environmental disputes in the region, this paper attempts to discuss Qur’anic environmental ethics.
