석유화학 기업의 기술혁신활동과 경영효율성 분석에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 기술혁신활동이 기업의 경쟁력의 중요한 원천임을 인식하고, 이를 효율성 분석모델에 중요한 투입변수로 포함하여 우리나라 석유화학기업들의 경영효율성을 분석하였다. 일반적으로 효율성 분석에 가장 많이 이용되고 있는 자료포락분석(data envelopment analysis, 이후 DEA)을 활용하여 국내 석유화학기업의 효율성을 기술적, 규모적 특성 측면에서 측정하였다. 그 결과, 첫째 벤치마킹 대상기업(best practice firm)을 발굴하였으며, 둘째, 개별기업이 효율적으로 재무성과와 기술혁신을 수행하는데 필요한 구체적 정보를 제공하였다. 또한 Super Efficiency Model을 이용하여 효율적 기업들 간의 순위도 밝혔다. 셋째, 기존의 효율성 분석에서 간과한 면이 있는 기술혁신 활동요소를 투입변수로 선정하는 한편, 기술혁신활동이 실제 기업의 효율성 향상에 영향을 미치는지 로지스틱회귀 분석을 통하여 추가검증을 실시하였다. 구체적으로, CCR모형에서는 23.4%의 기업들이 효율적인 것으로 나타났고, BCC 모형에서는 29.6%의 기업들의 효율적인 기업으로 측정되었으며, Mann-Whitney 검정을 실시하여 기술혁신 여부에 따른 집단간 투입변수와 재무적 성과간의 효율성 변화 차이 있음을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

Recognizing the significance of technological innovation for the competitiveness of firms, we applied technological innovation factors (i.e. R&D expenditure, education and training costs) as one of the input factors and highlighted their role in evaluating efficiency. This paper contributes to the understanding of firm level dynamics of management efficiency in Korean petrochemical industry in following ways. First, we have assessed relative technical and scale efficiencies of management and R&D resources across petrochemical firms. Accordingly, we identified the best practice of frontier firms for benchmarking purpose to improve their management efficiency. Second, by applying R&D expenditure with fixed asset and employee size as alternative input factors, we provide several plausible alternative explanations for the influence of technological innovation activity on the management efficiency. Finally, we have further investigated the relationship between innovation capability and management efficiency based on logistic regression analysis. We consider the industry specific factors for the analysis of our findings of the study.
