국문 초록

본 연구는 만 5세 유아에게 제공되는 10이상의 큰 수에 관련된 수 교구와 수 활동 즉 큰 수에 관련된 수 환경이 만 5세 유아의 십진법과 자릿수 개념 발달에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 서울과 경기도에 위치한 10개 사립 유치원의 큰 수에 관련된 수 환경을 한 학기동안 관찰하였다. 유치원의 수 환경에 따른 각 유치원 원아의 수 개념 발달 정도를 카이제곱 검정을 사용해 알아보았다. 그 결과, 큰 수에 관련된 제공되었던 수 교구와 수 활동이 많을수록 유아의 수 개념 발달에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 만 5세 유아에게 큰수에 관련된 수 환경의 제공이 십진법과 자릿수 개념 발달에 중요함을 입증한 것으로서, 만 5세 유아의 이러한 수 개념 발달을 도울 수 있도록 유치원의 교육과정 운영에 유아의 큰 수에 대한 경험을 돕는 적절한 수 교수법 개발의 중요성을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Korean 5-year-olds' mathematical experiences with large numbers on their development of base-ten system and place value notation. A total of 310 5-year-olds in ten selected classrooms participated in this study. 191 children in six classrooms were provided with many math materials and activities that engaged the children in exploring large numbers. However, 119 children in four classrooms were provided with math materials and activities that focused on small numbers less than 20. All children were administered to a series of test that measured their base-ten and place value understanding at the end of the year. The data was analyzed using x2-test as a statistical significance. The data analysis showed that the children with relatively many large number experiences had developed far better understanding of the number concepts than their peers with limited experiences of the same kind. The study suggests that young children be exposed to concrete math materials that support their representation of the number system, which, in turn, could play an important role in their math achievement in later school years.
