The psychological association with the colors of film costumes is considerably different according to the culture and the society. Therefore, it is an important task to know the characteristics of the culture and the historical period a film depicts and to analyze the usage of colors. This study aims at analyzing the colors expressed in the historical films of China and Korea, to finding out their characteristics, and defining the differences in the two countries’ color usage, and providing a basic material for color planning future film costumes. The results were as follows: First, Korean historical film costumes used more chromatic than achromatic colors for men’s tops, and women’s outwears, but mainly achromatic colors were used for men’s pants. In China’s case, for the costumes of both men and women, more colortul chromatic colors were used than achromatic colors. Second, the main colors of Korean men’s costumes were WH. Vp/RY, Dk/PB, P/P, and Lgr/Y, with a frequent usage as secondary arrangement colors V/R and BK. The main colors popular for Korean women attire were WH, Vp/RP, P/P, Dk/R, SR, and Dk/PB, and for the secondary colors Dk/R and Dp/R. A high percentage of Chinese male characters wore both as the main and secondary colors V/R and BK, while the female protagonists wore mainly Vp/YR, Vp/R, P/RP, Lgr/Y, and as secondary colors. R. And third, if one compares the characteristics of colors in Korean and Chinese films, one can see a considerably high proportion of the color WH being used in Korean films. Moreover, there is a frequent usage of pastel-shade for men’s pants and women’s tops, but this is not only reflecting traditional colors but also an aspect of modern fashion for hanbok in the new millennium. This research indicates that China clearly shows a strong preference for the color V/R. But whereas strong bright colors were used to make the men’s clothing, light pastel tones were generally used for the women’s tops, skirts and pants. This difference is interpreted as intentional in order to give a smooth and gentle impression even though the film maybe a story about heroic war battles.
