주자의 ‘횡설’과 ‘수설’

국문 초록

이 논문은 조선유학이 두 갈래로 나눠지게 된 이유를 규명하기 위한 기획연구 시리즈의 도론 격에 해당한다. ‘기호 배치방식’의 관점에서 볼 때 주자의 성리학은 횡설(橫說), 수설(竪說), 발설(發說)의 세 프레임으로 이루어져 있다. ‘횡설’은 갈등관계에 놓인 두 가지 속성(또는 성향)을 좌ㆍ우로 벌여놓고 대비적으로 설명하려는 기호 배치방식이고, ‘수설’은 형이상의 ‘원리’가 형이하의 ‘재료’에 타고서 공변(共變)하는 존재론적 기제를 승반(乘伴) 관계로 설명하려는 기호 배치방식이다. 그리고 ‘발설’은 잠재태로 있던 한 속성이 현실태로 전환되는 존재론적 이행과정을 설명하기 위한 기호 배치방식이다. 조선유학사를 점철한 수많은 성리 논쟁들은 주자 성리학을 구성하는 세 프레임 가운데 ‘횡설’과 ‘수설’의 대립으로 말미암아 벌어진 것이다. 이 글에서는 ‘횡설’ ‘수설’ ‘발설’로 대변되는 ‘기호 배치방식’이야말로 조선유학사에서 벌어진 성리논쟁을 명료하게 들여다보게 해주는 방법론적 틀임을 밝히고자 한다.

영문 초록

In this paper, the author aims at clarifying the ontologicomoral psychological feature of the relationship between dispositions and emotions in Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism. From a semiological point of view, Zhu Xi's theory of li and qi is composed of two different semiotic frames: one, horizontal arrangement of li and qi; the other, vertical arrangement of li and qi. While the horizontal frame is applied to describe the ambivalent relationship between li(that is moral dispositions) and qi(that is amoral dispositions), the vertical frame is applied to explain the ontological relationship in which li(that is the principle) supervenes upon qi(that is the matter). While Toegye, by adopting the horizontal frame, tried to depict the ambivalent relationship between li(that is moral dispositions) and qi(that is amoral dispositions); Kobong and Yulgok, by adopting the vertical frame, tried to explain the ontological relationship in which li(that is the principle) supervenes upon qi(that is the matter). The unexpected divergence of two frames splitted Joseon NeoConfucian scholars into two antagonistic groups. In this paper, the author, by illuminating two different semiotic frames that Zhu Xi adopts, tried to prepare the cornerstone to understand the reason why Toegye School and Yulgok School couldn't help but indulged into neverending controversy.
