국문 초록

다미아니는 근대의 개혁운동이 시작되기 훨씬 전에 수도원과 세속 교회의 개혁을 통해 중세 교회를 바로 세우기 위해 노력했던 은자요, 교회개혁가이다. 그는 당시의 교회개혁운동과 관련해서 중요한 개념들인 성직이나 세례, 그리고 교회와 국가의 관계 같은 것을 놓고 근대의 종교개혁가들, 특히 칼빈과도 유사한 면을 보여주고 있다. 다미아니가 보여준 교회개혁운동의 특징은 교회.국가관에 있어서 교회와 국가 사이의 역할 분담과 함께 나타나는 것으로서 수도원이념에 기초한 교계제(hierarchy)에 대해 보인 반감, 그리고 만인제사장의 이념으로 정리해 볼 수 있다. 그의 만인제사장 이념은 성경에 근거하여 만인제사장을 구현하려는 오늘날의 프로테스탄트 혹은 가톨릭교회의 구성원 모두에게 귀감이 될 만한 것이다. 다미아니에 대한 이런 긍정적인 평가와 별개로 그가 보여준 한계들 또한 지적되어야 할 것이다. 먼저 그는 교회.국가관이 견제와 균형의 권력체제를 위해 노력했던 칼빈의 경우와는 달리 구체적인 권력 분할까지 생각하지 못했다. 그리고 그는 독신생활이 가져오는 문제점을 들어 칼빈이 성직자 독신을 강하게 비판한 것에 반해 순결을 위해 성직자의 결혼금지를 요구하는 가운데 물리적 순결개념으로 치우치는 경향을 보이기도 했다. 이 외에도 다미아니의 은둔적이고 평등주의적인 개혁운동은 그를 수도원 울타리 안에 가두어 놓음으로써 '오직 믿음(sola fide)', '오직 은혜(sola gratia)', 그리고 '오직 성경(sola scriptura)'을 외치는 데까지는 나가지 못하게 만든 경향 또한 없지 않은 것 같다. 그럼에도 불구하고 칼빈이 말한 것처럼 중세 교회나 수도원에 신실한 사람들이 남아 있었고, 비록 중세 교회가 전반적으로는 타락해 있었음에도 거기에 말씀에 충실하려 몸부림치던 사람들이 있었다면, 그래서 루터와 같은 사람이 중세적 인물들로부터 복음을 들었고, 그것을 들려준 사람이 수도사였을 가능성이 높은 것 또한 사실이라면 다미아니를 그런 인물들 중의 하나로 볼 수도 있겠다는 생각을 하게 된다.

영문 초록

Peter Damian was a hermit reformer who lived in the midst of the hierarchical society. But believed that there was a profound equality among the members (Church and state, the clergy and the laity, men and women) in the Christendom, a fellowship which was not ruptured by hierarchical differentiation. His rejection of episcopal immunity echoed once again his profound intuition that the sacerdotal office demands service to one’s flock rather than domination over it. His thought about the equality of the members or the antipathy to the hierarchy in the Church was not different from the priesthood of all believers, which was one of the reformative subjects of Martin Luther and John Calvin. Indeed, Damian believed that by the grace of the same Redeemer, whose members we are, we too have received the gift of becoming exactly what he is. Defending the Biblical verses of Peter, Paul, and John, Damian concluded as follows. “By the grace of Christ every Christian is a priest, and hence has a perfect right to proclaim his wondrous deeds.” And this conclusion made his thought would be found not only in the modern reformers, but also in the Protestant and Catholic theologians of today. The ideological likeness of Damian and Luther or Calvin might come from the Augustinian theology, which was their common origin. In spite of such distinctive results, Damian has shown his limitations as a medieval man. First, he could not think the definite division of the powers as Calvin. Second, he was inclined to excessively attached the conception of physical virginal purity, which Augustine had overcome. Lastly, being circumscribed in the monastery, he could not go forward to say sola fide, sola gratia, sola scriptura, the sprit of reformation in the modern Ages.
