국문 초록

예수회 선교사들을 통해 서양에 알려진 유교문화는 계몽기를 향하고 있던 유럽지성들에게 하나의 충격으로 다가갔다. 중국에서 출판된 마태오 리치의『천주실의』가 중국에 서구적 세계관을 전한 책이라면 쿠플레의『중국철학자공자』는 유럽에 중국의 세계관을 전한 책이다. 이 책은 예수회 적응주의의 수준을 가늠할 수 있는 책이며, 당시에 특별히 종교적 관용과 보편주의적 경향을 보이고 있었던 계몽철학자들에게 깊은 인상을 주었다. 무엇보다 이 책의 발행은 적응주의에 대한 철학적 반성을 불러일으켰으며, 교회내부에서는 선교회간에 전례논쟁이 심화되었다. 선교사들이 당대의 철학자들에게 전례논쟁의 배후에 있는 학자들에게 중국철학을 형이상학적 보편주의로 볼 수 있는가에 대하여 자문하였다. 여기에 관여한 철학자들이 말르브랑슈와 라이프니츠이다. 따라서 전례논쟁은 이들에 의해 이기론에 관한 형이상학적 철학 담론으로 발전하게 되었다. 이 과정에서 말르브랑슈는 리 개념으로부터 관념 실체론과 유사성을 찾았고, 라이프니츠는 리 개념으로부터 물리적 원리이자 도덕적 원리가 결합된 모나드와의 유사성을 발견하였다. 이러한 보편주의적 철학적 경향은 계몽철학자들에게 영향을 미쳤다. 따라서 전례논쟁은 선교정책에 타당성을 논했을 뿐만이 아니라 철학적 담론으로 심화되어 계몽철학자들에게 중국철학에 대한 새로운 형이상학적 논구의 계기가 되었다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Confucianism which was transmitted to the West by Jesuit Missionaries during the enlightenment period was a kind of cultural shock to the European intellectuals. If the book T'ien-chu Shih-i (The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven) published by Matteo Ricci in China is about Westernized world view of China then Couplet's Confucius Sinarum Philosophus is the European Chinese world view. This book could be seen as a measurement of Jesuits degree of adaptation. As a matter of fact, it deeply impressed the scholars of the enlightenment period who showed a tendency of religious tolerance and universalism character. Above all, the publication of this book called on to the philosophical introspection of Jesuit accommodation and within the Church order it brought forth a serious argument on rituals. The Jesuit missionaries consulted those contemporary scholars on the validity of the universalism of Jesuit accommodation who had studied Chinese philosophy. Here the concerned philosophers are Malebranche and Leibniz. Therefore, rite controversy became a metaphysical philosophical discourse for them. In Discourse Malebranche found similarity with Li's idea of the substantialism and Leibniz found the concept of physical and moral principle in coherence with Monade and Li. This universalistic philosophical tendency influenced the enlightenment philosophers. Consequently, the rite controversy disputed not only the validity of the methods of mission, but also became an instrument, to the enlightenment philosophers who were already involved in intense philosophical discourse, for new metaphysical investigation of the Chinese philosophy.
