William butler yeats was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865, the son of John Butler Yeats, later well known as a portrait-painter. His mother came from the Pollexfen family which lived near Sligo, and Yeats spent much of his childhood with them. In Dublin Yeats attended high school and then art school, the latter from 1884 to 1886. He gave up painting abruptly and threw himself into literary work. From now on his life expanded in many different directions.
He founded Irish literary societies in both Dublin and London. In 1889 he met maud Gonne. A nationalist, and a beauty, she became his ideal love and his coadjutor in various nationalistic activities. But eventually, in 1903, she married major john Macbride. Her political extremism completed her separation from Yeats. She remained a figure in his poetry till the end.
To me extent Yeats fell under the spell of two famous occultists of the time, Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical movement, and MacGtegor Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical movement, and MacGtegor Mathers, founder of a magical order called the Golden Dawn. Yeats found their doctrines helpful in his own esoteric symbolism. That he was not totally credulous, however, is clear from his having been expelled from the Theosophists by Madame Blavatsky herself; he would have been expelled by Mathers as well if he had not succeeded in expelling Mathers first.
The Irish dramatic movement, which Yeats began to organize in 1899, took up more and more of his time, especially after the founding of the Abbey Theatre in 1904. The Easter Rebellion in 1916, though put down at once by the british, awoke his sympathy and his best political poems. The following year, 1917 Yeats married an Englishwoman George Hyde Lees.
The Yeats had a son and a daughter. They live off and on in a Norman tower called Thoor Castle Ballylee near Lady Augusta Gregory's house at Coole. After the Irish Free State was formed Yeats served six years in the Senate, and after his term he continued to devote himself to various schemes for invigorating the country. He died on January 28, 1939, in southern France, just before the Second World war began, After it was over, his body was exhumed and brought back to Ireland by an Irish destroyer. He was buried, as his poem had directed, near sligo, "under Ban Bulben"
