황순원의 『나무들 비탈에 서다』고찰

국문 초록

「나무들 비탈에 서다」는 오상원이나 선우휘와 구별되는 황순원의 휴머니즘의 특성을 잘 드러내고 있는 작품이다. 이 작품은 1부와 2부의 반복구조를 통해서 전후세대적인 감각을 수용하고 당대의 니힐리즘적인 분위기를 드러내면서 한편으로는 그 구조를 이완시키는 한 축을 통해서 휴머니즘을 표현하고 있다. 작가 황순원은 자신이 추구해온 사상을 기반으로 해서 전후세대의 감각을 수용하고 있는 것이다. 여기서 제시되고 있는 휴머니즘은 현실의 고통과 불안, 그리고 절망으로부터 벗어나서 희망적인 미래로 나아갈 수 있는 긍정적인 이념으로서 나타난다. 숙이라는 인물을 통해서 집약적으로 나타나고 있는 그것은 ‘잉태’로서 제시된다. 그것은 구체적인 행동을 동반하거나 적극적인 의미를 가지지 않는다. 또한 동호나 현태 등 이작품의 중심인물들의 삶과 자연스럽게 연결되어 있지도 못하다. 그것은 작가 황순원이 계속적으로 작품 속에서 드러냈던 휴머니즘 지향성이 숙이라는 인물을 통해서 이 작품에 덧붙여서 있는 모습이다. 그런 점에서 볼 때 이 작품에서 나타난 휴머니즘은 전후 현실에 뿌리박은 것이라기보다는 추상적이고 절대적인 것이라고 할 수 있다. 『나무들 비탈에 서다』는 전후세대의 불안과 상처를 형상화하고 그 세대의 나아갈 바를 제시하고 있음에도 불구하고 이 작품은 1950년대 문학이 보여준 한계 속에 갇혀 있다. 전후문학이 현실을 인식하는 시각의 부재로 인하여 현실에 대한 인식불가능성의 표현, 혹은 추상적 현실인식을 보인다고 할 때 이 작품 역시 그와 다르지 않다. 즉 1950년대 문학을 넘어서는 데까지 이르지는 못하고 있는 것이다. 그러나 현실의 상징화, 반복구조 등을 통해서 좀 더 성숙하고 완성된 작품의 모습을 이루어내고 있다. 이러한 상징화라든가 반복구조 등은 이 작품이 도식적이거나 감상주의적인 경향을 벗어나게 해주고 있기 때문이다. 『나무들 비탈에 서다』가 가지는 의미는 바로 거기에 있다. 현실의 추상적, 주관적 인식에 머물고 있지만 그것이 상징화라든가 반복구조 등을 통해서 작품 속에서 힘을 얻고 있고 그럼으로써 도식주의에서 벗어나 전후세대의 사랑과 상처, 그리고 불안과 절망을 문학화 하는 데 성공하고 있는 것이다..

영문 초록

So far, we have known about the aspect of conflict which is represented in the later works of Hwang Sun-won. In his later novels, he pays attention to the inner world of the individual and develops the novel. The inner conflict of these works is mostly due to the individual psychological quality and character, but implication of the works includes antagonism deriving from conflict in the reality and the individual. This these is dealing with the aspect of conflict, the aspect of the whole conflict is classified into the two. One is conflict of internal ego and external ego coming form individual consciousness. The other is conflict between the characters surrounding them. So, in Trees stand on the slope characters reveal experience about the conflict of ego on account of solitary by collective egoism. This these is dealing with the development and settlement of conflict. I discussed how it has developed and settled. In this place talking native of the relationship of ego and world. I observed Tree stand on the slop form on indication pursuit point of view. This these is treating the type of the character, classific standard of it lay in the role and function of the conflict aspect and conflict development and the characters was divided into Protagonist, antagonist, and mediator, Hwang Sun-wan also put several types of character and suggest a phase of their lives. The later writings project the life and consciousness of a petit bourgeois corresponding to the society and reality. Those petit bourgeois alienated psychologically are dealt with major figure and the writer puts emphasis on looking for their variation process of the consciousness reacting the reality. In this, antagonist and mediator behave against action of major characters, play a part on aggravate the conflict, result into consciousness change of action, and play an important role on settlement of conflict.
