유가적 전통에서의 인성교육

국문 초록

  이 논문은 교육의 핵심 과제의 하나인 인성교육의 올바른 방향을 탐색하기 위하여 오랫동안 한국전통 교육의 주류를 형성해 온 유가적 전통에서의 인성교육의 개념 및 인성교육의 원리와 방법상의 특징을 연구하는데 목적이 있다.
  먼저 몇 가지 대립적인 견해를 지닌 인성교육관을 고찰하고 그에 따른 인성교육의 원리와 방법에 대하여 고찰해 보았다. 인성에 대한 관점에는 크게 성선설, 성악설 및 중도적 입장의 세 부류가 있으나 유가적 전통에서는 성선설을 바탕으로 한 인성교육론이 주류를 형성해 왔음을 알 수 있다.
  결국 타고난 본성을 인의예지의 천리에 합당하도록 형성해 가는 과정이 인성교육이며, 이는 수기(수신)로 요약될 수 있다. 수기는 곧 격물치지와 성의정심으로 이루어지는데 격물치지는 인식론에 속하고 성의정심은 수양론에 속한다고 볼 수 있다. 현대 교육에서는 이 둘을 분리하여 접근하려는 경향이 강하여 수양론만을 인성교육이라고 생각한다. 그러나 유가적 전통에서는 인식론과 수양론은 결코 분리될 수 없으며 지식교육과 인격교육은 하나로 통합되어야 온전한 인간교육이 가능하다는 것을 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

  The purpose of this article is to study the concepts, principles and methodologies of character education in the Confucianism tradition in order to investigate the right direction of character education. Because the Confucianism had various influences on the Korean traditional education for a long time till Choson Dynasty closed, it will give many suggestions for us to study the direction of future character education. So this study was proceeded as follows.
  Some controversial viewpoints of traditional character education and their principles and methodologies were investigated. There were three main viewpoints of fundamental human nature; ①good, ②evil, ③neither good nor evil. The main stream of them is the Confucian viewpoint that human nature is fundamentally good.
  Finally, the process of being one"s inborn human nature in accordance with natural laws, that is, human-heartedness, righteousness, propriety, wisdom is character education. It can be summarized in cultivating one"s own self. Cultivating one"s own self consists of four concepts; investigating things, knowledge extension, absolute sincerity, rectifying minds. The former two concepts are theory of knowledge and the latter concepts are moral theory. They were originally one in the Confucianism tradition. But modern education made them devide in two. So integrating four concepts into one and harmonizing knowledge education with moral education is the important for the future character education.
