사회화과정과 일중독의 연관성에 관한 탐색적 연구 - 30대 화이트칼라 성인남녀의 구술생애사를 중심으로

국문 초록

  본 연구는 단순히 노동시간을 줄인다고 일자리를 나누어 일할 권리를 확보할 수 있는 것도, 이른바 ‘일하고 소비하는 문화’에서 벗어나 높은 삶의 질을 영유할 수 있는 것도 아니라는 인식에서 출발한다. 기존 사회학 연구에서는 노동자들이 자발적으로 과도한 일의 수행 원인을 노동조건으로 환원하고, 이에 따라 제도적 방책의 필요성을 역설하는 데 주력하였다. 이에 반해 기존 심리학 연구에서는 이를 개인의 문제로 환원하여 일중독으로 인해 발생하는 표면적인 문제들의 해결하는 데 주력하였다. 여기서 일중독은 단순히 개인의 선택으로만, 혹은 사회구조에 의한 영항으로만 단편적으로 보기는 어렵다. 한 개인의 삶의 선택은 개인적 체험에 의해서 이루어지지만, 동시에 그 개인적 체험은 사회적 의미를 기반으로 하고 있기 때문이다.
  따라서 본 연구는 일중독자들의 생애체험을 재구성하여, 개인과 이를 둘러싼 사회적 구조, 그 양자를 통찰해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 생애사 연구방법론을 사용하였다. 생애사 연구방법론에 의한 일중독 연구는 연구관점을 현재에 국한하는 것이 아니라 전체 생애사의 지형 속에서 조망하고 재구성함으로써 일중독을 추동하는 인식의 준거틀이 형성, 변화되는 과정을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 일중독을 이해하고자 한다.
  이 논문에서 재구성된 사례에서 참여자들의 현재 일중독의 양상은 어린 시절 사회화과정의 체험과 연관되어 있음을 보여준다. 1960, 70년대 ‘산업화의 역군’인 아버지와 ‘치맛바람’인 어머니 세대의 영항, 성장제일주의, 교육을 통한 계층 이동의 욕망, 가부장적 성역할에 대한 생애사적 체험이 복합적으로 현재 일에 대한 인식의 생애사적 배경을 구성하고 있음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

  This research begins with the theory that the reduction of working hours in itself is unable to provide occupational security, or enable a person to transcend the so-called "Culture of Work and Consumerism" and achieve a higher standard of living. To improve the workers" quality of life and relieve their exhaustion, the reasons why they are working so hard and concentrating on their jobs must be asked, and interpretations based on multiple approaches must be developed.
  This investigation would take white-collar workers in their thirties and attempt to recreate their sociological progression and their career from the basis of their life stories. Workers in their 30s have been affected, whether directly or indirectly, by the repercussions of the IMF, and furthermore, they are the first generation to be working in a flexible labor market. The aim of this paper is to examine the complex motives for working which are not simply based on economic motives and to examine the meaning of their work from the viewpoint of their life stories.
  The case examples listed in this paper shows that the research participants" work addiction is related to the social experiences one had as a child. The paper shows that the current attitudes regarding the career are constituted out of a multitude of complex factors including the influence of the parents, namely "Hero of Industrialization" father and the "Model Wife" mother in the 1960s and 1970s, economic growth oriented ideology, the desire to raise one"s social status using education, and the patriarchal gender roles.
  The research results showed that by reinterpreting the social experiences one had as a youth and the current work environment, we can discover the meaning behind one"s occupational life. First, as shown in the case examples, one"s social experiences form an important biographical background in deciding one"s attitude towards work. Secondly, the results of the participants" recreating their work is closely related to their socialization processes. Third, the research shows that any internal circumstances beyond the participants" control related to their work are also closely connected to their socialization processes.
