영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to compare the scholarly characteristics of Home Economics and Women's Studies and to identify the changes that have occured historically in the field of Home Economics associated with the development of Women's Studies in areas such as research and education. In this study, a literature review and empirical analysis was conducted. In the case of the literature review, materials in Home Economics and Women's Studies and 73 related theses that focused on women themselves since 1970 were examined. In the case of the empirical analysis, 7 Home Economists, either teachers or lecturers were interviewed and 141 syllabus from the second semester of 1977 to the first semester of 1991 were examined. The results of this study are as follows: 1) Home Economics and Women's Studies have common scholarly characteristics in that women have been the major source of investigation. This requires a multidisciplinary approach as an applied field of study, and its ultimate purpose becomes the welfare of humans. However, the two fields differ somewhat in how the purpose is achieved. That is, the study of Home Economics considers the causes of family problems to be within the household and therefore, tries to find solutions from the view of the household, Women's Studies views that modern society is structurally unequal and therefore the status of women would be improved by identifying and solving the causes of inequality. 2) Along with the development of Women's Studies, the types of changes reflected in Home Economics since 1970 are as follows : First, the content of these studies have become specialized. In particular, the experiences women have, that is, understanding problematic situations surrounding women. Attempts have been made to develop research using quality surveys, therefore increasing the quantity of samples and diversifying the methodology concerning areas such as women in poverty and oppression. Also, these changes are reflected in the curriculum of Home Economics. Second, in the process of developing research problems much effort has been expanded in pulling together foundational theories in various areas of studies. As researchers studied areas such as the role and status of women and researchers in Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Economics, and other related fields made efforts to apply areas such as exchange theory, role theory, resource theory, Marxist theory, and system theory in a very broad sense. As mentioned above, the changes revealed in Home Economics along with the advancement of Women's Studies leads me to predict that Women's Studies will continue to affect Home Economics considerably. However, there may be a problem applying world views, theories, and research methods from the view of Women's Studies in relation to Home Economics because of the differences in scholarly background between the two fields. In other words, there might be problems in forming an identity in the process of uniting Home Economics that pursues improvement through stability and Women's Studies that pursues reform. There could arise discord between ideals and reality due to the fact that prevention and solutions of existing problems lag behind the practicality of existing problems. The following are predictions about the probability of the future development between Home Economics and Women's Stuies from the above results: 1) In order to develop both Home Economics and Women's Studies together, each must accept the fruits of the other and particularly make an effort for joint studies and discussions about common concerns and research methods in the graduate curriculum. 2) In order to narrow the gap between the practice and theory, specific solutions must be provided. For this, research needs to be conducted from both a micro-and macro-perspective and various suggestions from individuals to society need to be implemented.
