Liberal nationalism is a liberal form of nationalism that tries to reconcile two sets of seemingly contradictory values: the values of liberalism and of nationalism. Liberal nationalists contend that nationalism is recommended on the ground that it promotes the liberal values such as individual freedom and individual dignity. At the same time, personal autonomy is essentially encumbered by being identified oneself with a national community. Of course, the possibility of liberal nationalism is attractive. How to appreciate both community and individuality, however, is not an easy matter. This paper aims at exploring major arguments of liberal nationalism and analyzing their limitations. I argue that under the name of nation, nationalism (liberal or otherwise) will exert pressure on individual's autonomy and force individuals to undertake acts of violent aggression and resistance that are sometimes unjust even according to minimal standards of morality. Liberal nationalism thus ultimately falls short of solving the problems of nationalism in relation to liberalism for both modern political theory and practice.
