군사주의가 재현되고 실천되는 공간으로서의 남녀공학대학교 - 평생교육학적 개입 장(場) -

국문 초록

거의 모든 대한민국 남성들에게 군대는 생애주기의 일부분이다. 그러나 군과 관련한 담론 지형은 만들어 지지 않아왔다. 소수 여성주의자들에 의한 담론은 여성에 대한 군사주의의 영향과 여성성과 남성성이라는 성별정치가 군사주의 유지 발전에 가장 핵심적인 장치임을 드러낸다. 본 연구는 군대에서 대학으로 다시 돌아온 이른바 ‘복학생’과, 그들과 교류하고 있는 여학생과의 인터뷰를 통해 군대와 남녀공학대학교가 만나는 지점을, 제도교육과 평생교육이 교차되는 곳으로서의 남녀공학대학교를 분석하였다. 인터뷰 결과는 1) 군 경험에 대한 폭력중심의 서사, 2) 군에서의 폭력 경험과 대학 내 위계적 선후배 관계, 3) 군 경험에 대한 서사 속의 두 여성, 4) 군에서의 성 경험과 후배 여성에 대한 시선 등 네 가지로 분류되었으며 각각의 범주는 두 개 이상의 하위 범주를 갖는다. 대학생들은 생애 발달 단계상 성인 초기에 위치한 사람들로서 그들이 재학 중 내면화하는 가치는 성인기 삶 전반에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 그러한 인식에 기반한다면, 대학은 성평등적이며 민주적인 가치가 기능하는 공간으로서 재구성될 필요가 있다. 그 과정 중의 하나로 대학과 군사주의를 만나게 하는 매개자로서의 복학생들에 대해 군사주의적 가치를 비판적으로 성찰할 수 있도록 돕는 적응 프로그램의 기획을 제안한다.

영문 초록

The Korean Peninsula has been divided into south and north since the Korean War which was made a truce in 1953, threes years after the war had been ignited by North Korea. The armistice has made it inevitable for South Korea to become one of 76 countries which oblige young men (and women) within a certain range of age to become military personnel for a certain period of time. Men in college are not an exception to the rule. Most of them consider fulfilling their duty as military personnel during their sophomore or junior, with a few of them delaying their service until the completion of under-graduate or graduate program. As a result, little less than a half of Korean male students on campus are those who served in the military in various forms such as the army, the navy, the air-force, the combat-police, KATUSA(Korean Augmentation Troops to the United States Army) or public personnel. Although I mentioned the Korean War as a cause of the obligatory military duty conferred on Korean men, the common experience of Koreans as the colonized of Japanese Militarism also contributed to making it a duty for Korean men to serve in the military. Chronologically speaking, the Korean independence of Japan was accomplished in 1948, the Korean War broke out in 1950 and lasted three years, the military government of the late president Park took the office in 1963 and continued for 16 years, and then subsequent military government came in and went through 1987. Thus the modern history of Korea is not possibly discussed without militarism. However, though the militarism has been prevailing in and become hegemonic of the society, few utilizes it as a unit of analysis in understanding the society. In addition, compared to masculinity and patriarchy, militarism has been much less explored by researchers. Particularly, co-ed colleges, majority of whose population are men dealing with military service as their past, present, and future form of duty, have seldom been analyzed from the perspectives with militarism in mind. In this context, the present study is intended to understand the influence of militarism on co-ed colleges. Since military or militarism assumes the dichotomy of “the protected” (women, children, and the powerless) and “the protector”(men, adults, and the powerful), analysis in the present study will look at the dynamics between women and men learners and its influence on their learning on campus. Interviews with women and men (4 women and 7 men) in colleges were performed to find out how men's experiences in the military exert influences on the dynamics between both genders. Research findings will contribute to making policies for gender equity education on campus.
