영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role and image of women in Korean television drama programs. Seven family-oriented television dramas were analyzed, employing a content-analysis method. The sample, which was. videotaped during the evening hours of one week period, i.e., Feb. 6~12, 1984, consisted of one episode of each regular series. The source of the sample included two channels of KBS-TV and one of MBC-TV. The major, minor and supporting characters in each episode were identified in the analysis and described in terms of demographic aspects. Also, each charater was rated on 20 five-point semantic differential-type personality scales. A total of 141 characters, including 68 males and 73 females, in 7 drama programs were analyzed by three female coders. Statistical analyses were based on x² test and t-test with. .05 preset α level. The results of the hypothesis testing of this study can be summarized as follows: 1) The world portrayed in Korean television family dramas was populated by adult male and female characters in almost equal numbers. Furthermore, female and male characters had equally important roles. These results can be explained in accordance with the characteristic of the family dramas. 2) There was no significant difference in age distribution among male and female characters in the dramas; however, if only raw frequency is considered, female characters were described as younger than male with their age frequency peaking in the 20's. 3) There was no significant difference between male and female characters in their marital and parental status. Among the sample, 41% of male and 40% of female characters were portrayed as married. The older generation has 3~4 children, while the younger generation had only one or two children. 4) The Korean television drama also depicted the traditional division of work in marriage. While 74% of the male characters were employed, only 34% of the female characters held jobs. Besides, 40% of the female characters were portrayed as housewives. 5) Working women were depicted as engaging in traditionally female occupations, showing significant sex-stereotyping. And yet, a new trend was reflected in the content of the dramas. Female characters were beginning to move toward higher and more prestigious fields which had been traditionally male domain. 6) Personality profiles of female characters in the dramas confirmed the traditional sex-stereotype. Women on Korean television family dramas were dependent, submissive, patient and less ambitious than men. Even though they were not passive, they also were less active than male characters. The major female characters were less obvious sex-stereotypes. 7) The problems depicted in the dramas were more personally and less professionally-oriented with emphasis on family relationship. Harmony and discord both appeared in personal relationships and encounters. More serious and Iarger scale problems of society scarcely appeared in the dramas. Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that women depicted in Korean television drama programs have still not emerged from the confines of tradition which limit them to play conventional stereotypes. Further research is needed in this area with varying sample programs which will go beyond the family drama programs.
