The purpose of this study is to clarify motives, itinerary and general patterns associated with the traveling of the upper class in the Chosun Dynasty based on twenty travel accounts of Mt. Kumgang. As to the motives of traveling to the Mt. Kumgang, Chosun's literati wanted, first of all, to appreciate beautiful scenery of the mountain. They also used the opportunity to harden their body and purify troubled mind. Another reason for the learned people to head for the mountain was to get a first-hand experience with the cultural and historical heritage that remained in the visiting site. The examination of the itinerary to and from the Mt. Kumgang reveals just as interesting facts. Although the specific itinerary differed a bit depending on the points of departure, the literati generally took the shortest and convenient route to the mountain. Those who lived in Seoul mostly went through the Kyunghungro, or the artery leading to Kyungheung in the northeastern corner of the Korean Peninsula. Once in the destination, the travel schedule was almost similar. In the preparation stage for the trip, the literati gathered information on the mountain from travel accounts and experienced travelers and saved money for the expenditure on the road to the travel site. They usually moved with friends and family members and accompanied house servants and musicians. On the road, office-holders of local governments in the neighborhood of Mt. Kumgang and priest tour guide joined the group of travelers. Favorable time for travel was Fail or the interim between late Spring and early Summer. The means to move back and forth the home and travel site was horse, whereas the literati relied on palanquin when they looked around the Mt. Kumgang. The travelers took a boat in the Haekumgang on the East Sea. They stayed at private houses, official residences, pony-stations, or Buddhist temples on the round trip, and at temples while in the mountain. The literati did not merely appreciate the landscape of Mt. Kumgang, they also made an inquiry into the historic and cultural scene and conducted other secondary activities such as visiting relatives, discussing with companions, writing poems, inscribing names on the rock, and so forth. The activities were traditionalized as a custom through the habitual practices of traveling for generations. Key words: travel account of mountain, Mt. Kumgang, literati, itinerary, traveling practice, Chosun Dynasty.
