사유로서의 도덕: 아렌트의 도덕관

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 사유를 기반으로 하는 아렌트의 도덕관을 설명하는 데 있다. 도덕에관한 아렌트의 견해는 이론적 논의의 지평에서 출발한 것이 아니라, 그가 목도한 20세기의 정치적 비극을 철저히 이해하고 반성하고자 함에서 비롯된 것이다. 자신의 문제의식을 바탕으로 일련의 도덕철학적 탐구를 진행하면서, 그는 특히 고대 희랍의 지혜와도덕적 통찰에 주목하였으며, 이를 통해 ‘사유’(Thinking)라는 인간의 정신활동에 도덕을 정초하고자 하였다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 사유의 속성을 ‘의미탐구’, ‘내적 대화’, 그리고 ‘고독’의 세 가지 측면에서 설명하고, 그것의 도덕적 함의를 드러내보고자 하였다. 아렌트의 사유는우리의 삶과 관련된 모든 것들의 의미를 검토하고 성찰하는 것으로, 지식이나 실제적목적에 봉사하는 활동이 아니다. 또한 그는 사유를 나와 나 자신의 소리 없는 대화로규정하였는데, 이는 사유가 나 자신을 대면하는 자기-의식적인 활동임을 의미한다. 마지막으로 고독은 사유할 때의 인간의 존재방식으로, 사유하는 나는 외부의 활동을 중지하고, 자기 자신을 대면한다. 아렌트에 의하면, 이 끊임없이 반복되는 사유의 과정에서인간은 비로소 그 자신을 자아를 갖춘 하나의 온전한 인격체로 형성하며, 이와 같이 형성된 개인의 인격은 곧 그의 도덕성과 일치한다. 이런 점들을 종합해볼 때, 한 인간의사유 활동은 그의 도덕성과 필연적 관련성을 지닌다. 사유는 그 자체로 도덕적 숙고이며, 다른 모든 인간 활동의 바탕을 이루는 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to discuss Hannah Arendt s Ethics which is based on ‘Thinking’. Her view on morality did not start from the angle of theoretical discussion, but from her thorough understanding and reflection on the political tragedy of the 20th century. Through conducting a series of moral philosophical research, she especially focused on the wisdom and moral insights of ancient Greece, and tried to establish morality in the human mental activity of thinking. This can be viewed as a modern reinterpretation of the Socratic Morality. In this regard, this article explores the attributes of thinking in three aspects; ‘quest for meaning , silent dialogue with myself , and solitude and discuss the moral implications from them. According to Arendt, Thinking is not about a knowledge or problem-solving but a process to examine and reflect on the meaning of everything related in our lives. In addition, she defined thinking as the silent dialogue of myself with myself, it means that thinking is a self-conscious activity to face and be with myself. Lastly, solitude is a mode of human existence through thinking which is distinguished from other modes of being alone, loneliness or isolation’. In solitude, a man have to stop other activity and face himself. In this process of thought, a mere human explicitly constitute himself a specifically person; his personality coincides with his morality. Through this moral effect, Arendt viewed that thinking could be a necessary condition to prevent men from evil-doing.
