국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 맥킨타이어의 덕윤리와 그것에 함의된 도덕교육의 의미를 고찰함으로써 그의 이론의 의의와 한계를 밝히는 데 있다. 맥킨타이어의 덕윤리는 현대의 정서주의 윤리학과 그것에 기인한 가치의 상대주의 문제에 대한 극복 방안으로 대두된 이론이다. 그의 분석에 의하면, 현대 윤리학의 이러한 경향은 도덕의 구조에서 목적을 제거한 계몽주의자들의 기도로 말미암은 것이다. 그 결과 인간의 자아는 개인과 동일시되었으며, 도덕의 실천과 정당화는 서로 무관한 별개의 개념이 되어버렸다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 맥킨타이어는 아리스토텔레스의 목적 개념을 복원하려고 하였지만, 그것을 사실 수준의 전통으로 대체함으로써 결국 자신이 그토록 비판하는 상대주의와 동일한 노선을 걷게 되었다. 도덕의 기준은 다른 어떤 곳이 아니라 인간의 삶의 모든 실천에 내재한다는 그의 주장을 받아들이더라도, 도덕의 기준을 사실과 동일한 수준의 것으로 간주하는 관점은 상대주의에 대한 올바른 대안이 될 수 없는 것으로 보인다. 이러한 점은 맥킨타이어의 덕윤리의 의의와 한계를 동시에 나타낸다.

영문 초록

This article is to clarify its significance and limitation by considering A. MacIntyre’s virtue ethics and its implication on moral education. His virtue ethics is a reaction against a moral philosophy, i.e. emotivism. Emotivism entails disagreement of morals and it is dignified by ‘pluralism’. MacIntyre suggests that these characteristics of modern ethics derived from the key episodes in the moral history. The one of the episodes is Enlightment project of justifying of morality by abolishing teleology. By consequence of the failure of the Enlightment project, the concept of self is regards as same as that of individual, and practicing and justifying of morality are treated as separated activities. To solve these problems, MacIntyre seeks to restore as the context which gives morals significance. But in the procedure, MacIntyre substitutes ‘tradition’ for Aristotelians’ teleology and follows the emotivists’ course which he criticized. It is acceptable that telos is embeded in every practice of human life. Nevertheless his viewpoint can not be escape from the title of pluralism so far as he takes the standard of morals that it is in the same dimension with human experiences. This point is not only significance but also limitation that his thesis implies.
