국문 초록

이 글은 서양 중세 수도원운동의 이념과 그 교육사적 공헌을 탐색하기 위한 것이다. 이 일은 교육의 목적을 통사적 관점에서 이해하는 데 작게나마 도움을 줄 것이다. 이 글에서 특별히 베네딕도 수도회에 주목하는 이유는, 서로마제국의 멸망 시기를 살았던 설립자 베네딕도 성인이 완성한 ‘수도 규칙’이 그 당시는 물론이고 오늘날까지도 수도생활의 바탕이 되고 있는 만큼, 그것을 통해 중세 수도원운동의 이념과 그 교육적 면모를 엿볼 수 있다고 기대하기 때문이다. 이하에서는 베네딕도 수도회를 사례로 ｢베네딕도 규칙서｣(Regula Benedicti)를 통하여 중세인들의 삶의 이념을 살펴보고, 다음으로 그것을 전통으로 계승하는 서방 수도원들의 실천을 중세인들의 공부방법인 ‘렉시오 디비나’(lectio divina) 수행의 변천 과정을 중심으로 살펴본 후, 끝으로 수도원운동의 교육사적 공헌을 생각해보도록 하겠다. 중세 수도원운동은 현대인들에게 망각된, 공부와 학문의 가장 높은 경지가 무엇인지를 일깨워주고 있다는 점에서 성스러운 여가를 추구하는 교육 운동으로서 의의를 갖는다고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the ideal of the Medieval Monastery Movement in the West and its contributions to educational history. Hopefully, it could help us understand the purpose of education from a wider historical perspective. The reason that this paper focuses especially on the Benedictine Order is that the Regula Sancti Benedicti (the Rule of St. Benedict) established by founder St. Benedict, who lived through the fall of the Western Roman Empire, is still used as the basis for monastery life to the present day. Because of this, I expect to be able to get a glimpse into the ideal of the Medieval Monastery Movement and its educational aspects. What follows is an examination of the everyday ideal of medieval people through the Regula Sancti Benedicti based on the case of the Benedictine Order; then an examination of Western monasteries that inherited the tradition with a focus on Lectio Divina, a traditional monastic practice of scriptural reading, meditation, and prayer; and finally a contemplation on the contributions of the Monastery Movement to the history of education. For modern people who have forgotten, the Medieval Monastery Movement is a reminder of the highest level of academic pursuit; one can confidently say that it was an educational movement that sought sacred leisure.
