우아한 거짓말: 경력단절 어머니들의 학교운영위원회 경험

국문 초록

본 연구는 경력단절 어머니의 학교운영위원 경험을 심층적으로 이해하기 위해 학교운영위원회에 2년 동안 참여한 경력단절 어머니 2명을 면접하였다. 면접자료의 내러티브를 분석한 결과 경력단절 어머니는 학교운영위원회 참여 이전에 전업주부가 되어 자녀 양육과 가정 운영을 전적으로 책임지는 것에 동의하였지만, 사회적 영역에서 소외감을 느끼고 있었다. 사회적 소외감을 극복하기 위해 자녀가 다니는 학교의 여러 봉사활동에 참여하고, 동료 어머니들과의 교류를 통해 가정 밖 사회로의 외출을 시작하였지만, 자신의 사회복귀 가능성을 낮게 평가하였다. 학교운영위원회에서 ‘거수기’ 역할을 요구받았지만, 경력단절 어머니들은 공식적인 회의 석상에서 위원이라는 사회적 직함을 가지게 되었고, ‘누구의 엄마’가 아닌 자신의 이름으로 다시 불리는 경험을 하였다. 이를 통해 사회로 복귀할 자신감을 얻었다. 학교운영위원회 참여가 끝난 뒤 어머니들은 사회적 영역에서 활동을 시작하거나 시작할 계획을 수립하였다. 연구 결과는 경력단절 어머니의 사회복귀 과정과 그 과정 속의 학교운영위원회 경험의 관점에서 논의되었다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of career interrupted mothers’ school council experiences. For this purpose, this study interviewed two mothers who had two years’ school council experiences and explored their narratives. Before being a school council member, mothers fully took care of children and household work. They agreed with this role when they decided to be a full-time housewife, but they felt depressed and isolated after a few years of being a housewife. They involved in voluntary school work along with children’s schooling and have started to involve in mothers’ networking. However, they did still not feel competent to go back to the workplace. The school asked the mothers to be a rubber stamp, so they did not feel empowered in the school council. However, they felt competent to go back to the workplace, since they were called by their own names instead of someone’s mother and gained a social title as a council member. After school council experiences, they made plans to resume their careers and started working as a para-professional. Discussion addressed an understanding of the career path of career-interrupted mothers and suggestions to improve school council management.
