국문 초록

2013년 UNESCO는 ‘지식 사회에서의 미디어 리터러시와 정보 리터러시 간 개념적관련성’이라는 보고서에서 앞으로 모든 국가 국민들이 미래의 지식 사회에 참여하여자신의 삶을 향상시키고 사회적 평등과 정보의 권리를 추구할 수 있는 21세기적 능력을갖추도록 권장하였다. 이로부터 6년이 흐른 지금, 이 연구는 한국과 말레이시아의 고등교육 기관에서 미디어 리터러시와 관련된 프로그램들이 어떻게 운영되고 있는지 비교분석한다. 미디어 관련 프로그램을 가진 ICT 선진국으로서 한국의 대학 45곳과 같은 대륙에 위치한 개발도상국 가운데 하나인 말레이시아의 대학 21곳을 전수 조사하여 비교분석하여 두 나라가 가진 차별적 위상 속에서 미디어 리터러시 교육 시스템이 보여주는유사성과 차이점을 세부 프로그램들을 살펴보면서 정리하고 특히 강조되는 미디어 리터러시 역량강화 방안의 핵심을 살펴본다.

영문 초록

In 2013, UNESCO reports on the conceptual relationship of information literacy and media literacy in knowledge societies, and recommends the training of 21st. century competencies for all citizens, so that they develop the ability to participate in the future knowledge societies, improve their livelihoods, and strive for social equality and information right. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the media-related programmes and courses offered to foster media literacy empowerment in the higher education institutions of the Republic of Korea and Malaysia by using an ‘Input-Process-Output framework’ adapted from the key competencies highlighted by UNESCO. Based on comparative analysis of media-related studies and primary data collected from the targeted universities, this paper opts for an exploratory study on the public and private universities that offer degree programmes with media-related courses. In total, the sample covers 66 universities of which 45 universities are in the Republic of Korea and 21 universities in Malaysia. After comparative analyses from different university curricula, this paper discusses the similarities and differences and identifies the programmes and courses in order to highlights the competencies that foster media literacy empowerment.
