케빈 밴후저의 성서해석학에 대한 비판적 고찰 - 현대 문학비평과 폴 리쾨르의 철학적 해석학의 수용을 중심으로-

국문 초록

현대 문학비평에서 ‘저자의 죽음’은 텍스트의 생산자로서 저자의 권위를 높였던 낭만주의 해석학의 폐기를 선언한 것이다. 롤랑 바르트와 데리다는 ‘저자의 죽음’을 문학비평과 후기구조주의 철학에서 확산시켰다. 저자의 죽음은 ‘독자의 탄생’을 이끌어내면서 텍스트 해석의 다양성을 확장시켰음에도 불구하고, 텍스트를 절대화시킴으로 해석의 불가능성 혹은 해석의 다원주의를 가져왔다. 폴 리쾨르는 이러한 상황에서 담론으로서의 텍스트의 존재를 부각시킴으로 저자의 죽음으로 인한 텍스트의 자율성을 인정하면서도 동시에 그 안에서 저자의 권위를 일정부분 회복시켰다. 케빈 밴후저는 폴 리쾨르를 포함하여 비트겐슈타인과 존 오스틴을 필두로 한 영국의 일상언어 학파와 하버마스의 의사소통행위 이론이 이러한 입장을 더욱 지지해준다고 보았다. 그리고 이러한 입장이 성서해석학에 적용될 때, 원저자이신 하나님과 성서텍스트가 지시하는 예수 그리스도에 대한 내용이 독자인 인간에게 적절하게 이해되어질 수 있다고 주장하였다. 이러한 밴후저의 입장은 데리다의 과격한 해체주의가 가져온 해석학적 허무주의의 폐해를 감쇄시킬 수 있지만, 여전히 저자의 의도를 텍스트에서 유추해낼 수 있다고 본다는 점에서 전통적인 면이 있고, 오늘날 현대 모더니즘 문학이나 성서의 묵시록에서 온전히 해석될 수 없는 텍스트의 무의식적 세계에 대한 이해의 한계를 드러낸다. 그럼에도 불구하고 ‘의미수반 발화행위’에 기반하여 성서 텍스트의 합리적 해석 가능성을 논증했다는 점에서 그의 광범위한 성서해석학 연구는 오늘날 성서의 권위를 인정하면서도 이를 현대적으로 이해하고자 하는 사람들에게 유용한 근거를 제시하고 있다.

영문 초록

In the literary criticism of modern literature, “the death of the author” is a declaration of the abolition of the romantic hermeneutics that raised the author’s authority as the producer of the text. Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida were instrumental in spreading the “death of the author” concept in literary criticism and poststructuralist philosophy. Although the “death of the author” led to the ‘birth of the reader” and extended the diversity of interpretation of text, the absolutization of text brought about the impossibility or the pluralism of interpretation. Under these circumstances, Paul Ricoeur highlighted the existence of text as a discourse, thus acknowledging the autonomy of the text due to the death of the author while at the same time restoring some of the authority of the author in it. Kevin Jon Vanhoozer viewed this concept, like Paul Ricoeur, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and John Austin, as a further support of British ordinary language philosophy and Habermas’s theory of communicative action. When this position is applied to biblical hermeneutics, it asserts that the original author, God, and the meaning of the Bible text, Jesus Christ, can be properly understood by the reader. Such a position held by Vanhoozer can reduce the nihilistic damage brought about by Derrida’s radical deconstructionism. However, there is a traditional aspect in that it is still possible to deduce the author’s intent from the text. This reveals the limitations in understanding the unconscious world of text, which cannot be fully interpreted by contemporary modernist literature or by the apocalypse of the Bible. Nonetheless, based on the “illocutionary act,” Vanhoozer argued for a rational interpretability of the biblical text. His extensive biblical hermeneutics research provides a useful foundation for those who recognize the modern authority of the Bible today and want to understand it in a modern way.
