국문 초록

본 연구는 중등 영어교사들은 일상생활을 어떻게 하고 있으며, 자신의 업무와 교직 현실을 어떻게 의식하며 교직생활에 적응해나가는 지 그 발달과정을 규명하고, 이를 토대로 영어교사들이 공유하고 있는 교직문화의 특성을 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 중학교와 고등학교 영어교사의 생활을 관찰하고 심층면담, 설문지 조사 등을 통하여 질적연구와 양적 연구를 병행하였다. 연구결과 임용 초기에는 열의로 임하나 경력이 쌓여갈수록 영어교사로서의 위기의식을 느끼며 이를 개방적인 자세로 수용하여 학생들로부터 전문성을 인정받고자하는 수업지상주의와 영어교사에게 밀려오는 위기의식으로부터 벗어나고자 하는 승진에의 집착 문화로 구분되고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to describe and understand the English teachers life and culture, using survey and ethnographic method. Major problems concerned in this study were as follows: First, what are the ways of living of English teachers in Korea like? Second, How are they adapt themselves with school lives in the course of developing instruction skill? Third, what are the common cultures which English teachers develop while adapting themselves to school lives? The major findings from the participations, interviews and in-depths were as follows: First, the main aspects of English teachers were early beginning for the extra classes before the regular classes, developing their teaching skill to gain the desirous effects but they were suffering from the insufficient facilities for foreign language teaching and busy preparing for the teaching materials and dealing with administrational tasks. Second, the development stages of English teachers were progressed in four steps: pre-teacher stage, beginning stage, authentic teachers stage and retirement-preparing stage. In each stage, English teachers tried to achieve the professionalism for the students and acknowledgement from the society around. Third, the cultures for English teachers were Teaching-centered and the promotion-centered. They are the resulting aspects from the crisis sense.
