The compositional structure of calcium phosphate ceramics is similar to that of human bone and tooth, because of biocompatibility, they are considered good dental implant materials. The author compared the bone reactions to the hydroxylapatite and tricalciumphosphate implant, made in this country, with those to the titanium blade implanted in dogs as control. The bone reactions to the two different kinds of materials were observed according to biocompatibility and macroporosity under light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. An apparent bone formation was observed from the first week in the groups of implanted tricalciumphosphate and hydroxylapatite. 2. Localized bone covering to interface of implant began from the first week in tricalciumphosphate and from the fourth week in hydroxylapatite, and coining into the eighth week almost every interface was covered with bone tissues in every subject, in the cases of both tricalciumphosphate and hydroxylapatite. 3. According to the findings of scanning electron microscope, titanium groups had only partial bone tissues covering at the interface through the period and most was surrounded by connective tissues. But tricalciumphosphate groups and hydroxylapatite ceramics had almost bone coverage at the interface which was the same as the findings from light microscope. 4. In comparison with dense tricalciumphosphate and dense hydroxylapatite groups, at porous tricalciumphosphate and porous hydroxylapatite groups,inital connective tissues fromation had irregular surface and after 2 weeks during bone formation period, papillary nodules composed of bone tissue were observed at the interface of implant. 5. According to the findings of scanning electron microscope, from the fourth week, growth of connective tissues and bone formation in macroporosities were observed from the groups of porous tricalciumphosphate and porous hydroxylapatite implants.
