국문 초록

This article analyzes the evolution of Korea-Japan relations in recent years, examining the complex interplay of political-diplomatic developments, historical disputes, domestic political dynamics, economic factors, and regional security considerations. The study highlights the changes that took place after the election of President Yoon Suk-yeol in 2022, which marked a significant diplomatic shift compared to the previous administration, fostering rapprochement through strategic alignment and increased trilateral cooperation involving the United States. The role of the U.S. and convergence in security cooperation, particularly in relation to North Korea’s threats, has been a major factor in consolidating bilateral rapprochement. However, unresolved historical grievances, particularly related to forced labor and wartime sexual slavery, have repeatedly influenced diplomatic interactions and public sentiment, leading to persistent domestic opposition especially in Korea. In addition, political transitions in both countries underline the fragility of recent diplomatic achievements. The article argues that sustainable improvement in bilateral relations necessitates institutional frameworks addressing historical controversies and domestic political challenges, supported by robust trilateral cooperation to enhance regional stability.
