대학 안에서 정치적 양극화 현상을 경험하는 대학생의 인식에 대한 질적 사례연구: 미국의 A 대학을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 정치적 양극화 현상이 대학 안에서 대학생들에게 실제 어떠한 영향을 주고 있는지 탐색하고 그 의미를 고찰하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 정치적 양극화의 영향이 강하게 나타나고 있는 미국의 A 대학을 선정하여 질적 사례연구를 진행하였다. 대학생들의 정치적 양극화에 대한 실제 인식과 경험을 풍부하게 담아내기 위하여 다양한 인종, 성별, 전공의 대학생 총 12명을 선정하여 반구조화된 심층 면담을 실시하였다. 연구 결과 대학생들은 정치적 양극화 현상으로 인해 대학 캠퍼스 내에서 혐오 발언, 증오범죄, 사이버 폭력 등의 부정적인 영향을 인식하고 경험하고 있음이 드러났다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 교육기관인 대학에서 정치적 양극화로 인해 야기되는 부정적인 영향의 특징과 의미에 대해 논의하였다. 본 연구는 미국 대학생의 사례를 연구했지만, 정치적 양극화가 심해지고 있는 대한민국의 현실을 감안할 때 한국에 있는 대학과 대학생들에게도 정치적 양극화와 관련된 부정적인 영향에 대한 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This qualitative case study aimed to find how political polarization affects students at colleges and universities and to explore the meaning of these effects. For the purpose of this study, one university which is strongly influenced by political polarization in a large city in the U.S. was selected to collect data. Data were collected from the analysis of semi-structured and in-depth interviews with 12 students from various races, genders, and majors in order to obtain a rich and detailed description. The outcomes of the analysis were presented that students perceived and experienced arising the negative impact such as hate speech, hate crime, and cyberbullying on campus by political polarization based on the lack of mutual respect for different races, cultures, and ideologies. Along with the findings, this study discussed the characteristics of negative effects caused by political polarization in the campus community as an educational institution. This study could provide several implications regarding the negative and side effects of political polarization on colleges and universities in South Korea since political polarization, the same as the U.S., increasingly affects all parts of South Korea's society.
