국문 초록

독일 작곡가 한스 첸더(Hans Zender, b. 1936)의 음악극 《돈키호테. 31개의 극적 모험》 (Don Quijote de la Mancha. 31 theatralische Abenteuer , 1989-1991/1994)은 스페인 소설가세르반테스의 유명한 동명 소설을 바탕으로 작곡가가 직접 대본을 작성하고 극을 구상한 작품이다. 이 곡에서 ‘모험’은 귀족 계급의 기사 돈키호테의 엉뚱한 모험을 뜻할 뿐 더러, ‘극적모험’이라는 부제목이 암시하듯이 극의 형식에 대한 실험을 의미하기도 한다. 이처럼 이 작품은 단순한 소설의 극화(Theatralisierung)를 넘어서 오페라가 아닌 우리에게 낯선 음악극(Musiktheater) 장르의 형식에 관한 작곡가의 특별한 구상을 보여준다. 소설의 주요 사건들을 반영하는 31개 각각의 개별 장면들은 작곡가가 직접 선정한 5개의 기초요소들인 노래, 대사, 악기연주, 그림, 연기의 각기 다른 조합으로 구성된다. 이러한 기초요소들의 분리와 결합과 같은 극의 형식에 관한 실험을 통해, 첸더는 “시간은 흘러가고 공간은 머무른다”는 선입견대신 “시간은 멈추어 있고 공간은 변화 한다”는 사고를 보여주고자 하였다. 이외에도 그는 여러 가지 작곡 기법과 극적 장치를 사용하여 시각의 청각화와 청각의 시각화를 시도하였으며, 이로써 청중들이 이 작품에서 “눈으로 듣고, 귀로 보기”와 같이 감각의 지각을 새로운 방식으로 경험하게 되기를 의도하였다.

영문 초록

The musical theatre 《Don Quijote de la Mancha. 31 theatralische Abenteuer》 (1989-1991/1994) of the German Composer Hans Zender(b. 1936) is a work that he has been redesigned and rewritten himself on the basis of the world-famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes(1547-1616). The word “Abenteuer”(Ger.) means not only the exciting adventures of the main character, Don Quijote, but also the experiment at a form of the genre ‘musical theatre’, as the subtitle of “thearalische Abenteuer” implies. The piece consists of 31 individual scenes that reflect the main events of the plot. These scenes are made up of the 31 musical and theatrical forms, each with different combinations of the five basic elements such as Sprache, Gesang, Instrumental Spiel, Bild and Aktion. Through association and dissociation of these basic elements Zender wanted to indicate an idea of “time stay, space goes” instead of a prejudice like “Time flows, space remains.” He also tried to visualize the acoustic element and to auditorize the visual element. Through this, he insists on “hear with eyes, see with ears” to the listener. We can finally experience the perception of sences(Sinneswahrnehmung) in a new way in this musical theatre piece.
