[력사문화서지] 민속영상 자료의 분석과 활용에 얽힌 저술윤리와 역사인식

국문 초록

타인의 저술에 대해서 논평을 작성한다는 것은 비판정신에 입각해서 학문적으로 수행되는 것이 당연하다. 필자는 최길성 교수의 저서 <영상이 말하는 식민지 조선 – 증보판>에 대하여 논평작성에 임하면서, 다시 한 번 더 학문적인 비판정신이란 것에 대해서 생각을 하게 된다. 학문적인 비판정신이 없으면, 그 학계는 죽은 것이나 다름 없다. 나는 최 교수의 저서를 대하면서, 저술활동에 얽힌 출판윤리와 역사인식이라는 문제를 깊이 있게 생각하는 기회를 갖게 되었다. 최 교수의 저술은 식민지시대의 조선에서 촬영된 영상물(영화와 사진)을 대상으로 하여, 식민지시대 일본인 연구자들이 어떻게 어떠한 관점을 갖고 식민지조선의 상황에 대한 영상기록물을 남겼는가 하는 문제의식으로 출발한 것이라고 생각된다. 본고의 필자는 여기까지는 최 교수의 입장에 대해서 한치의 거리낌도 없이 동의할 뿐만 아니라 바람직한 문제의식의 제시에 대해서 전적으로 동감을 표하는 바이다. 문제는 최 교수가 그러한 문제의식을 자료로 분석해서 논증해 나가는 방식에서 드러난다. 그가 저서를 구성하는 주된 자료를 획득하는 과정은 무단사용에 의한 것이라고 말할 수밖에 없다. 필자가 감히 최 교수의 행위에 대해서 무단사용이라는 단어를 적용하는 것은 그의 행위가 추호의 용서를 받아서도 안된다는 의미이다. 다음과 같은 전후의 사정이 있었다. 최 교수가 저서 속에서 주된 자료로 삼았던 사진들의 출처는 최 교수 자신의 연구과정에서 획득된 것이 아니고, 이문웅 교수(서울대학교 명예교수)의 USB에 담긴 내용을 모종의 방법으로 복사한 것이라는 점이다. 그 과정에서 이문웅 교수는 전혀 언질을 받지도 않았을 뿐만 아니라 전혀 모르고 있었다. 최 교수는 자신이 주도하는 일본의 과학연구비 과제를 수행하면서, 이문웅 교수를 초빙하여 자신이 근무하는 시모노세키의 동아대학 연구실에서 이문웅 교수의 연구결과를 발표하도록 자리를 마련하였다. 초청된 이문웅 교수는 발표를 위하여 자신이 준비해간 USB를 최 교수에게 건네었고, 최 교수는 그 USB의 자료를 복사한 것으로 생각된다. 물론 이문웅 교수가 제시하였던 자료들은 서울대학교 인류학과의 교수들이 공동으로 연구한 결과물이었고, 그 연구결과물은 최 교수의 저서가 발간되기 전에 서울대학교출판문화원에서 발간되었다. 그렇다고 해서 최 교수의 저서는 이 출판물을 인용하지도 않았다. 따라서 최 교수의 연구물이라고 하는 저서는 자료획득 과정에서는 무단사용임에 분명하고, 결과적으로 표절의 흔적도 남기고 있는 것이다. 최 교수의 저서에 담겨있는 식민지 시대의 조선과 그 상황을 바라보는 관점은 납득하기 어려운 부분들이 적지 않게 담겨 있다. 친일과 반일이라는 구도를 설정해 놓은 최 교수의 저서는 지극히 애매한 입장으로 일관되어 있다. 그것도 식민지시대를 바라보는 역사인식이라고 인정한다고 할 수 있다고 하더라도 필자는 최 교수의 애매모호한 입장이 일본과 한국의 양쪽 입장에 대해서 전혀 도움이 되지 않는 해괴한 위치라고 생각한다. 그의 저서에 담긴 한글을 구사하는 방식에 대해서도 아연실색하지 않을 수 없다. 예를 들면, 식민지 시대의 사진 자료에서 보이는 “빨래를 삶는” 장면에 대해서 서술한 최 교수의 글은 인용하기도 어려울 정도의 어색함을 보이고 있다. 이러한 서적이 출판되는 과정에 개입한 출판사도 크게 반성해야 할 것이라고 생각하고, 나아가서 이러한 서적을 ‘우수학술도서’로 선정하여 추천한 대한민국학술원에 대해서도 비판의 날을 세우지 않을 수 없다. 그러한 과정에 개입한 개인들도 모두가 크게 반성해야 할 문제라고 생각한다.

영문 초록

This review article focuses on Prof. Choi Kil-sung’s book titled as (revised edition) and tries to analyze the content of it in terms of critical perspectives. This author employs two different concepts to review the book. One is publication ethics and another one is historical awareness. Dr. Choi’s book has honorably been recommended as an ‘excellent book’ by The National Academy of Sciences, Republic of Korea and published the revised one within a year which the book had been dealt with as a kind of best-seller. One might consider this kind of successful record being a great deal of contribution to the field of anthropology and folklore both in Japan and Korea. The characteristics of the nature of this book can be recognized as the rareness by means of publication process itself. The rareness comes from the images including both films and steel photos of the colonial Korean cultures. What I like to argue in this paper is, first of all, the author’s ethical degree for publishing articles and books. Prof. Choi who taught and researched in the field of anthropology and folklore in both Japan and Korea for whole his life employs many photos related with Akamatsu and Akiba’s co-works during the colonial times. Most of photos were kept in both Seoul National University’s Museum and Sohng Suk-ha’s collections. The problem with Mr. Choi’s ethics broke unbelievably out of a paper presentation at his place in Shiminoseki. He invited Prof. Lee Mun-woong, an anthropologist at Seoul National Universtiy, in his seminar and let him show his(Prof. Lee) recent research result on the Colonial Korea in terms of photo collections from Seoul National University’s Museum(actually this author was one of research members of the same project). I have eventually heard the following. Prof. Lee prepared for a USB to have a slide show on those photos and handed it over to the organizer to present his talk in Prof. Choi’s place. Then Prof. Lee came back to Seoul after finishing his presentation. Prof. Choi published the book including most of photos from Prof. Lee’s USB without any kind of permission or consent or even excuse to use the content of the USB. After the publication, Prof. Lee complaint against Prof. Choi about the matter. Then Prof. Choi sent a letter to the director of Seoul National University’s Museum to ask for consent to use the problematic photos at stake. How can I believe this book as being excellent one recommended by The National Academy of Sciences, Republic of Korea? Speaking for the section under the historical awareness on Prof. Choi’s book, I as a reader would say the following. His position to view the Japanese colonialism on Korea has very much been ambivalent. His position seems to be very much opportunistic. Some of description in the book make readers greatly disappointed both in the content and even in summoning some Korean words to describe those photos. I do not like his way of distorting Korean language itself by employing curious expression to explain some photos. I feel greatly sorry to write this review because the publication process of so-called academic book could not filter out those faults in his manuscripts for publication. I feel so sorry to write this review because The National Academy of Sciences, Republic of Korea could not check out those faults in Prof. Choi’s book. Lastly, I feel a little bit of anger against Prof. Choi’s attitude to extort somebody’s research result without any form of permission and consent beforehand.
