Yongju Jo Gyeong(1586∼1669), living from the late 16th century till the mid 17th century, is one of representative literati in the mid-Joseon period. However, despite his political and academic status, the research regarding him up to the present is little. Although the researches on Yongju till now were mainly of his literature, they can be hardly called full-scale or overall. The fact that most researches about Yongju were of his literature shows that Yongju’s literary reputation in his contemporary time was enormous. Especially, the previous evaluations about Yongju’s literary capability were all regarding his proses, and such features are predictable by his academic lineage, the structure of his anthology, and the number of his literary pieces. However, either if his poetic capability is underestimated or if it is assumed that he did not pay much attention to poetry due to such features, they are superficial misunderstandings unlike the reality. This paper is to examine Yongju Jo Gyeong’s poetry based on his impromptu poems. This paper takes Yongju’s poetry for the subject because this study thinks that his poetry maintained enough literary value and achieved considerable poetic height. Especially, due to the characteristic of impromptu poems of immediate-raw creation, this paper attempts to examine his poetry through his impromptu poems. Without corrections and revisings, an impromptu poem is written at the moment of poetic feelings, so it is of the poetic genre directly exposing its poet’s literary capability by its own characteristics. Therefore, this paper selects Yongju’s impromptu poems for the objects of analysis in order to examine his poetic capability and the literary height of his poems without any other consideration. The number of impromptu poems recorded in Yongju’s anthology is 22 in total under 21 titles. Among them, there is only one serial seven-character-four-line poem that consists of two poems through-composed under the title of Manseong(謾成) , and the rest of them are one-poem-under-a-title. Five-character-four-line poems and five-character-eight-line poems are 2 each under 2 titles; seven-character-four-line poems are 7 in total under 6 titles; 10 seven-character-eight-line poems under 10 titles; and a seven-character old-style poem under a title. When the contents of Yongju’s 22 impromptu poems are carefully examined, they can be categorized into three: first, Yongju’s excitements felt in countryside; second, exposing of hermitism; and third, expression of self-cultivating will. These three categories of Yongju’s poems are thought to be the result of his perceptual reaction toward various landscapes and situations that he was facing.
