《수호전》의 음식과 그 서사적 함의

국문 초록

비록 음식이 주된 소재는 아니지만, 《수호전》의 에피소드 중에는 음식이 등장하는 경우가 적지 않다. 음식이 인간 삶의 가장 중요한 요소 중 하나인 만큼, 양산박 호걸들을 중심으로 인간사를 묘사하는 《수호전》에서도 음식은 빠질 수 없는 소재인 것이다. 이 음식 중에는 육류가 가장 많지만, 해산물, 과일, 채소 반찬, 떡 등의 일상 음식과 진귀한 재료의 궁중 음식도 포함되어 있다. 그중에서도 소고기는 거의 《수호전》 시작부터 마지막까지 계속 등장하며, 꽤 많은 부분에서 단순한 묘사를 넘어 유의미한 서사적 작용을 하고 있다. 이러한 점에 착안하여 본 논문에서는 먼저 《수호전》 전체의 음식 관련 부분을 표로 정리하고, 음식이 서사적 역할을 하는 대표적 사례로서 송강이 먹은 생선과 그에 얽힌 사건을 소개할 것이다. 그런 다음에는 《수호전》에서 가장 자주 등장하는 소고기 관련 부분을 분석하여, 영웅호걸의 음식, 그리고 반역과 금기의 음식으로서 《수호전》 속 소고기에 대해 논할 것이다. 농경사회에서 소고기는 생산 활동과 직접 관련되었기 때문에 함부로 도축하거나 먹을 수 없었으며, 전통시대 중국은 소고기의 도축과 불법적 유통을 금지하고 국가가 이를 엄격하게 관리하였다. 따라서 기존 국가 질서에 반기를 든 양산박 무리에게 소고기는 자연스레 영웅호걸의 음식이자 반역과 금기의 음식이 되기도 했다. 이러한 관점 아래 본 논문에서는 《수호전》에서 소고기가 갖는 함의와 서사적 작용을 작품 속의 여러 에피소드와 함께 분석할 것이다.

영문 초록

Although food is not the main subject of Shuihu Zhuan 水滸傳, there are many instances of its appearance in the work. As food is one of the most important elements of human life, it is an indispensable element in Shuihu Zhuan as well which depicts the people of the Liangshanpo 梁山泊 group. Meat is the most common among the foods mentioned in it, but fish, fruits, vegetables, rice cakes, and dishes for the higher classes made from rare ingredients are also included. Among them, beef appears almost all throughout Shuihu Zhuan, and many of these instances serve as meaningful narrative devices. From this perspective, we first summarize the food-related excerpts in Shuihu Zhuan and analyze fish as a representative example of food as a narrative device. Next, we investigate the reference to beef, which is the food most referred to in Shuihu Zhuan, and discuss how it became the hero’s food, and a symbol of rebellion and taboo. In the agricultural society in which Shuihu Zhuan is set, cattle was directly related to production and could not be slaughtered or eaten carelessly, and in the traditional era, the slaughter of cattle and illegal distribution of beef was forbidden in China. Therefore, for the Liangshanpo group, who rebelled against the national order, beef naturally became the food of the hero and the symbol of rebellion and of what is taboo. This paper analyzes the narrative implications of beef in several episodes of Shuihu Zhuan.
