국문 초록

유교적 지배질서가 강화된 조선 사회에서 여성들 간의 관계에 대해서는 특별한 사회적 가치와 위상이 부여되지 않았다. 여성의 사회적 위치는 남성을 매개로 했을 때에만 의미가 부여되었으며, 여성들끼리의 관계는 남성 질서에 어떤 부정적인 영향이 예견될 때에만 사회적 주목의 대상이 되고 규범화의 영역에 포함되었다. 이 글에서는 그러한 조선 사회에서 드물게 여성 간 관계성을 깊이 있게 읽어낼 수 있는 자료로 <자기록>을 주목하고 모녀간, 자매간, 고부간 관계의 특징적 양상을 살펴보았다. 먼저 작자의 어머니는 외모, 인격, 판단, 성행 등의 모든 면에서 매우 ‘이상화된 인격체’로 그려지고 있으며 이러한 어머니는 작자에게 ‘생애 모델’이자 인생관에 절대적인 영향을 미친 존재였음을 살펴보았다. 그러한 어머니를 10세경에 사별하고 몇 달 만에 계모를 맞은 충격과 슬픔은 작자가 삶을 비관적인 눈으로 바라보게 하는 데 결정적인 영향을 주었다고 분석했다. 한편 친정 언니, 시모와의 관계에는 공통적으로 일생에서 가장 큰 ‘생애 경험’을 함께 체험한 강한 ‘연대 의식’이 자리하고 있음을 살펴보았다. 작자와 언니는 어머니를 잃은 후의 비통함과 애도를 함께 나눌 유일한 혈육이라는 배타적 유대감을 공유했으며 훗날 작자의 남편의 간병을 지지하고 도우며 더 끈끈한 자매애를 구축한 관계였다고 보았다. 작자와 시어머니는 혼인 초기에는 서로 약간의 거리감을 느끼는 관계였으나 작자의 남편을 간호하는 과정에서 비합리적인 시어른들의 지시에 암묵적인 공동 대응을 하면서 유대감을 형성했음을 지적했다. 나아가 남편 사후에는 작자가 시모의 자결 시도를 적극적으로 저지하고 남성 중심적인 유교 이념 속에서 속현의 대상일 뿐인 여성의 처지를 공유함으로써 새로운 유대 및 의존 관계를 구축하였다고 보았다. <자기록>은 조선이라고 하는 남성 중심적이고 가부장적 사회에서 ‘여성의 입장과 경험’을 통해 공감대를 형성하는 모녀, 자매, 고부 간의 관계 및 그 속에서 실현된 모성적 돌봄과 자매애적 유대 관계를 잘 보여준다. 나아가 다른 여성에 대한 기억을 글로 남기는 기록자이자 전달자가 될 수 있음을 보여주는 텍스트이기도 하다. 이러한 여성 간 유대와 돌봄과 자매애, 나아가 그것의 기록의 가능성은 여성들의 관계에 대한 가부장제의 상상과 기획을 넘어서는 것이었다. 이것이 바로 <자기록>이 갖는 여성문학으로서의 가치라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

is a material that shows the deep “relationships among women,” which was uncommon in the men-centered Joseon society. This thesis examines the characteristics of the relationship between mothers and daughters, sisters, and mothers-in-laws and daughters-in-laws, as shown in . The author’s mother was described as an “ideal person” in every aspect, including her appearance, character, and intellectual ability. The author’s mother was not only a “lifetime model” to the author, but also had a significant influence on her view of life. Within a few months of losing her mother, when she was only ten years old, the author had to accept a stepmother. The shock and sorrow had a decisive effect on the author, causing her to view of life negatively. Meanwhile, there was a strong “sense of solidarity” in her relationships with her elder sister and mother-in-law, as they shared “lifetime experiences.” The author and her elder sister shared a sense of exclusive solidarity from sharing grief and condolences after losing their mother. Later, the elder sister helped to care for her brother-in-law, which provided them with the opportunity to build a stronger sisterhood. In the author’s relationship with her mother-in-law, they felt a little bit of distance from each ther during the early days of the marriage. However, they gradually formed a sense of solidarity by jointly and implicitly responding to their irrational parents-in-law. After the death of her son and husband, the author actively stopped her mother-in-law’s suicide attempt and built a new relationship by sharing the position of women in the men-centered society.In the men-centered and patriarchal Joseon society, emphasizes the importance of “women’s position and experiences,” maternal care, and sisterhood relationships. Moreover, it shows that a woman, through writing, could record and transmit memories about other women. This was something beyond the imagination and planning of patriarchy regarding relationships among women. value as women’s literature may lie in this.
