국문 초록

우시지마 하루코는 ‘주(祝)’라는 통역사를 그린 만주문학의 대표작을 남겼다. 소설 속에 등장하는 인물 주리앤티앤은 제국일본의 언어를 체득해 제국의 정책과 피지배자간을 연결하는 식민지의 ‘사이􋹲존재’였다. 그러한 통역사와 젊은 일본인 관리가 의기투합하여 만주의 농촌에서 새로운 정치를 펼쳐 나가는 모습은 만주국의 민족협화와 왕도락토를 실천하는 국책문학으로 손색이 없다. 그러나 우시지마 하루코가 이 소설 속에 그리고자 했던것은 단순히 국책에 추종하는 것이 아니라 ‘사실을 사실로 인정하고, 그것을 바른 방향으로 지켜가려는’ 지향점에 있었다. 그녀가 지향했던 지점이 무엇이었는지 작가 자신의 직접적인 말로는 표현되지 않았으나, 본 텍스트에서 그리고 있는 것은 두 주인공들이 보여주는 합리적 연대이다. 그리고 지향점과 동시에 드러나 있는 ‘만주국의 사실’은 주라는 인물이 속해 있는 회색 지대였다. 주는 지배자인 일본인들에게는 “독이 될 수도 약이 될 수도 있는 과실의 유혹”으로, 피지배자이자 동족인 중국인들에게는 ‘민족의 배신자’로 인식되었다. 본 작품은 질서/무질서, 지배/피지배, 남성/여성, 문명/야만, 인간/자연으로 깔끔하게 이분화되지 않는 영역에 있는 중간자적 ‘사이􋹲존재’의 ‘위험성’을 포착하여 그의 타자성을 부각시킴으로써 만주국이 현재 걷고 있는 길의 한계와 제국주의의 모순을 드러내고 있기도 한 것이다.

영문 초록

Ushijima Haruko(牛島春子) wrote a masterpiece of Manchurian literature, which depicts an interpreter called “Zhu(祝)”. The character “Zhu Liantian(祝廉天)” in the novel was a colonial “inbetweener” who connects the empire s policy to the subjects by learning the language of Imperial Japan. The collaboration between such a colonial interpreter and a young Japanese official so as to create new politics in the rural areas of Manchukuo(滿洲國) is surely a good material for writing a propaganda literature to realize the Ethnic Harmony of Manchuria(民族協和) and the Imperial Paradise on the Royal way(王道樂土). However, what Ushijima Haruko wanted to describe in this novel was not the point of follow-up to the national policy but was the point of “accepting facts as facts and keeping them in the right direction”. Although the point she intended was not expressed in her own words, a rational union of the two characters could be found in the text. In addition, “the facts of Manchukuo”, which were spontaneously revealed with the points, were a gray zone to which Zhu belonged. Zhu was perceived as “the temptation to be a poison or a medicine” to the ruling Japanese, and as “a betrayer of the nation” to the subject Chinese. This novel emphasizes his otherness by capturing the “danger” of the intermediary “inbetweener” in areas which are not clearly distinguished by order/disorder, domination/domination, male/female and civilization/barbarism. Also, it describes the limitation of the current situation in Manchukuo and the contradiction of imperialism.
