국문 초록

이 연구는 토착심리학(indigenous)적인 관점에서 한국인들의 고유한 문화 변수(체면과 우리)가 갈등상황에서 커뮤니케이션하는 방식에 어떤 영향을 주는지 살펴보았다. 또한, 감정 변수(분노와 연민) 가 문화와 갈등전략의 관계를 어떻게 매개하는지 검증하였다. 연구결과 갈등상황에서 체면은 갈등전략에 우리보다 더 강한 영향력을 갖는 것으로 나타나, 체면이 갈등해소 전략에 미치는 영향과관련한 선행연구 결과를 지지하였다. 또한 체면과 우리가 갈등해소 방식에 미치는 효과는 갈등 유형에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 체면은 상대적으로 감정관여도가 높은 갈등 상황에서 영향력을 보였다. 감정변수인 분노의 매개효과 또한 갈등 유형에 따라 다르게 나타났는데, 상대적으로 감정관여도가높은 갈등 상황에서는 연민의 매개효과가 나타났던 반면, 상대적으로 감정관여도가 낮은 갈등 상황에서는 분노의 매개효과만이 발견되었다. 이와 같은 결과를 통해 한국인의 문화변수가 가지는 맥락적 특성에 대한 기존의 이론적 논의를 경험적으로 입증하였다.

영문 초록

This study examined how the unique cultural aspects of Koreans influence the way they communicate in conflict situations. First, “Chemyon” had a stronger impact on conflict resolution than “Uri” in conflict situations, supporting the results of previous studies on “Chemyon” and conflict communication. Second, the impact of indigenous cultural variables on conflict resolution varied depending on the types of conflict situations. The predictive power of “Chemyon” was stronger in more emotionally-involved situations. Third, the mediating effect of emotion also differed by the types of conflict. In more emotionally-involved situations, compassion appeared to mediate the relationship between culture and conflict while anger was found to be the mediator in less emotionally-involved situations. The results empirically supported the contextual nature of Koreans’ cultural characteristics and their impacts on communication.
