Six barley varieties were tested in order to investigate variations of initiation of ear primordium, leaf emergence, stem and young spike elongation, and heading time under the different seeding dates(Oct. 22, Feb. 24 and March 24). The rates of plant elongation, leaf appearance, development of ear primordium, and stem and young spike elongation vs. thermal time after seeding were highly significantly fitted by linear regressions under both fall and spring sown. The plant elongation rate of Sacheon #6(GH I : 0.0689 ㎝/℃d) in fall sown was a little higher than other five varieties(0.0878-0.1096 ㎝/℃d).
In spring sown, the rates of plant elongation in Sacheon #6, Kuromugi #148, and Kamaore #1 (GH Ⅰ-Ⅲ ; 0.0824-0.1030 ㎝/℃d) were significantly higher than the group of GH Ⅳ-Ⅶ (0.0564-0.0768 ㎝/℃d). The tillering patterns vs. thermal time in fall and early spring sown did not change consistently with the different degree of growth habit, but generally the winter type had higher tillers than the spring type did. There were well-defined three tillering patterns in late spring sown, and tillering number of winter type(GH Ⅳ- Ⅵ) were the greatest followed by facultative(GH Ⅲ) and spring(GH Ⅰ-Ⅲ) types.
The rates of leaf emergence(0.0129-0.0150/℃d) were not different among varieties in fall sown, but the patterns of leaf emergence vs. thermal time in spring sown were two or three for 6 barley varieties, and the spring type had higher rate of leaf emergence than the winter type did.
The developments of ear primordia(0.02106-0.0290/℃d) in fall sown were not different among varieties with slightly higher rate for the spring type compared with the winter type. In spring, sown the rates of ear primordium development were significantly different among varieties with markedly higher rates for the spring type(0.0294-0.0339/℃d).
There were 2 or 3 patterns of stem elongation in the winter and spring types, respectively, and the spring type had higher rate of stem elongation than the winter type did.
According to multiple regression equations, the heading time in field was largely affected by stage Ⅵ, rapid stem elongation and degree of growth habit. So as to breed an early variety, it is desirable to screen lines having traits of cold resistance, faster rates of stem elongation and development of ear primordia in early spring season.
