국문 초록

본 연구는 재미 한인 유학생의 문화적응, 문화적응 스트레스, 우울증의 관계를 조사하고, 또한 문화적응정도와 우울증사이에서 문화적응 스트레스가 매개요인으로 작용하는지를 분석하고자 한다. 본 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유학생들에게 가장 높은 문화적응 스트레스 요인으로 나타난 항목은 그 중요도에 따라 학업실패에 대한 두려움, 학과 경쟁, 영어능력, 미래직업에 관한 항목들로 나타났다. 둘째, 문화적응정도가 낮을수록 문화 적응 스트레스가 높은 것으로 나타났으나 문화적응정도와 우울증사이에는 유의미한 관계가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 문화적응 스트레스는 재미 한인유학생의 우울증 예측에 있어 중요한 요인인 것으로 조사되었다. 마지막으로 문화적응 스트레스는 재미 유학생의 문화적응 정도와 우울증사이에서 매개요인으로 작용하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 높은 문화적응은 낮은 문화적응 스트레스를 야기하게 되고 이는 다시 재미 유학생의 우울증을 감소시키는데 영향을 미친다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 기술된 연구한 계에도 불구하고 재미 한인유학생의 미국문화적응을 이해하는 기회를 제공했으며 문화 적응 스트레스를 완화하기 위한 서비스제언을 포함하고 있다.

영문 초록

The study examines the relationships between acculturation, acculturative stress, and depression among Korean students in the United States. In addition, the mediating effect of acculturative stress on the relationship between acculturation level and depression was tested Findings included: (1) most identified stressors were in the chronological order of fear of academic failure, academic competition, English proficiency, and future career: (2) students with less acculturation experienced high acculturative stress, whereas no relationship was found between acculturation and depression: (3) acculturative stress strongly predicted depressive symptoms among Korean students: and (4) acculturative stress mediated the relationship between acculturation and depression. The results of the study indicated that high acculturation may result in less acculturative stress, thereby decreasing the likelihood of Korean students experiencing depressive symptoms. Although the study presents some limitations, it provides a rare opportunity to understand the acculturation process of Korean students in the U.S. The study also suggests the need for providing the specialized services so that the students can better cope with acculturative stress.
