영문 초록

There is multiplicity and variety of studies investigating mandibular growth. The classic theory of mandibular growth is based on the concept that manduibular growth is dependent on a condylar growth center, but the exact role of the mandibular condyle in influencing mandibular growth is still a point of conflict. Moss(1968) has formulated the functional matrix theory. Succinctly stated that there is no direct genetic influence on the size, shape, or position of skeletal tissues, only the initiation of ossification. All genetic skeletogenetic activity is primarily upon the embryonic functional matrices. Mandibular growth is the sum of growth of each one of the mandibular skeletal units(corpus, condyle, coronoid process, angular portion, dentoalveolar units) which has independet growth. The purpose of this study is to discover the ratio and correlation between the mandibiular skeletal units in Korean normal adults. The author selected 60 females and 64 males who have normal faces in Korean adults and used the panoramic radiograph. The result as follows: 1. Between the males and females, the length of each mandibular skeletal units are significantly difference. 2. Between the right and left side of mandible, everyone has symmetry. 3. There were significant correlation between the ratio of length of each mandibular skeletal units(corpus, condyle, coronoid process, angular portion) in all. 4. Between the males and females, there were significant difference in the ratio of length between the angular portion and other mandibular skeletal units(condyle, corpus, coronoid process).
