This study explores the characteristics of moves and factors constituting the skill and muscle activity of the Yeopchagi, Side kick, in the series of Poomsae and Taekwondo by both video analysis and electromyography analysis. The purpose of this study, providing with a scientific basis on Yeopchagi, is to suggest the correct teaching method to coaches, teach players how to perform the Yeopchagi in an efficient way. and to improve the players mind set during Taekwondo competitions. The subjects of this study are six male Taekwondo players that are registered in the Korea Taekwondo Association. Three out of the six players are superb and have award records in national competitions, and the other three common players have no award record. The results of the study after tests are as following. First, the suggested change in required time during Poomsae Yeopchagi is as following. It is suggested to have the required time in Phase 1 short and increase the explosive power and vertical power of the kicking foot so that they are carried into Phase 2. In Phase 3, the knee joint is stretched-out as fast as possible. Second, the suggested change of the body weight is centered as following. Upper body turns to right to convert potential energy to kinetic energy until the kicking foot leaves ground and kicks the target. Change the center of balance so that it is heightened and the knee joint angle is stretched-out as far as possible. The body moves forward while the center of balance is on the supporting foot. The body movement is minimized in Poomsae Yeopchagi. Phase two will bring out the efficient Yeopchagi you are looking for. Third, the suggested change in speed of the center of balance is as following. In the preparation posture, the center of balance is low and the explosive power of kicking foot is heightened. The supporting foot and upper body turns together while the body speed accelerates. On the other hand, the displacement of the upper body is smaller and left/right moves are minimized during Poomsae Yeopchagi to prevent over rotation. Fourth, the suggested angle change of body joints is as following. In Phase 1, heel is pulled toward straight thigh muscle and thrusting power is heightened. Knee joint angle is flexed and supporting foot has plantarflexion at maximum angle when it stretches out. Itslowly decreases when hitting the target to keep the balance. In Phase 3, knee joint is stretched-out at maximum, almost close to 180°°, and the hip joint angles of kicking foot and supporting foot have minimum flexion. Fifth, in Phase 3, it is important to enhance the stability of move by higher muscle contracting power of right straight thigh muscle and right gastrocnemius of supporting foot. InPhase 3, the knee joint of kicking foot is stretched-out as far as possible so that the posture isstable when hitting target and hitting power is stronger. In conclusion, in Phase 1, heel leaves ground quickly toward straight thigh muscle to increase thrusting power. After knee joint angle is flexed, right/left moves are minimized. During stretch-out, the plantarflexion is at maximum angle. When hitting target, it gradually decreases while body balance is on supporting foot to keep body balance. In Phase 3, knee joint is stretched-out at maximum, almost close to 180°°, and hip joint angles of kicking foot and supporting foot have minimum flexion. The right gastrocnemius and right straight thigh muscle of supporting foot showed high muscle activity. It suggests that they have close relation with the stability of moves during Poomsae Yeopchagi move. The bicephalus brachii and straight thigh muscle of kicking foot are believed to have big impact on target-hitting power.
