국문 초록

본 논문은 19세기 여성 인식이 그 시대적 변화와 맞물리면서 어떻게 지속되고 변화하는지를 살피기 위해 시도되었다. 이를 위해 여성의 효행과 열행에 대한 평가가 드러나는 문집의 자료를 대상으로 검토했다. 19세기와 20세기 초에 활동한 문인들이 쓴 여성 행장, 묘지명 등의 자료를 검토한 결과, 이 시기 대부분의 여성 기록은 효행과 열행에 주목하여 여성의 생애를 재구하고 있었다. 거의 모든 여성의 기록이 효열 담론의 영역에서 거론될 수 있음은 효/열행이 여성의 삶을 평가하는 보편적 도덕 기준으로 자리잡았음을 말해준다. 이를 통해 19세기가 효열담론이 절실히 필요했던 시기였음을 유추할 수 있다. 19세기 여성 효열 관련 기록은 기술 방식과 그 지향에서 몇 가지 특징을 보인다. 첫째, 몇 백 년 전 과거의 인물을 다시 기록하거나 당대의 인물에 관한 기록이라고 하더라도 그 집안에 효열로 이름난 조상들을 함께 배치하는 경향이 확대된다. 둘째, 하층민의 극단적 열행 기록이 증가하고 하층민 내부에서도 열행에 대한 적극적 평가가 드러나 교화의 범위를 하층민에게까지 넓히고 있음이 드러난다. 셋째, 열행이 효행 또는 충과 관련성 속에서 의미화되는 경향이 나타난다. 이러한 양상은 19세기라는 불안한 격변의 시대를 겪으면서 여성의 열행을 통해 전통 사회의 근간이었던 가치를 회복하려 애썼던 상층 남성 지식인들의 도덕적 결단과 맞물려 있다고 본다. 19세기 효열 담론에서 거론되는 여성은 오로지 효녀 또는 열녀로서만 그 존재의 의의를 인정받게 된다. 점점 더 강화된 효/열의 기준은 과거/누대 기록의 재편성이라는 방법을 동원하여 '지금/여기'에 없는 典範적 실체를 구현해내도록 했다. 그 과정에서 순절 열녀의 열행을 神聖化하는 허구적 기술이 노골적으로 드러나는데, 이러한 양상은 효열 담론이 당대 사회의 현실적 맥락에서 의미를 지니지 못하고 허구적 영역에서만 존재하는 것임을 방증한다. 19세기에 오면 순절한 여성에 대해서만 열녀로 인정하는 데 반발하여 살아남은 여성에 대한 적극적인 평가를 요청하는 글이 많아진다. 그렇지만 이들 여성은 늘 정절과 관련한 위기에서 벗어나지 못한 채 산 자로서의 삶을 누리지 못한다. 이는 순절열녀가 죽은 후에 열녀로 영원히 살게 되면서 자기 존재를 입증받는 것과는 다르다. 철저하게 고립된 삶을 살면서 정절 위해의 순간에 늘 과감히 생을 포기할 것을 요구받는다는 점에서 효열담론은 살아남은 여성에게 폐쇄적이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is attempted to find out the aspects of the awareness for women in the 19th century. For this purpose, I reviewed about 1,170 articles〔墓誌, 行狀, 行錄, 遺事, 論, 書 etc.〕 in the miscellanies of the literati bookman in the 19th and early 20th century. Most documents that depict the women's life are centered around the filial duty〔孝〕 and chastity〔烈〕. Almost documents are concerned with the discourse on the filial duty and chastity〔孝烈談論〕, it implies that the conduct of filial/ chastity is settled down the universal moral evaluation of women's life. The literati bookman in the 19th century felt the desperate need of the discourse on the filial duty and chastity because they sure the discourse on the filial duty and chastity could enlighten the people fell into the moral hazards in the precarious age. The characteristic of the documents for women filial duty〔孝〕/chastity〔烈〕 in the 19th century are as follows. (1) It is recorded the past figures who were dead a few hundred years ago again, and tend to put together the contemporary portraits with the ancestors who were famous for the filial duty/chastity. (2) It is increased that the documents deals with the excessive filial/chastity conduct of the lowest class people, and even the people of the lowest classes has been internalized actively the meaning of the filial duty/chastity. (3) The chastity conduct connects to the filial conduct, and the loyalty 〔忠〕 frequently. These aspects are correlating with the moral determination of the male intellectuals that tried to restore the traditional values against the turbulent time in the 19th century. The women in the discourse of the filial duty/chastity could not be the subject ordinary, but could be recognized the meaning of existence only when they become a filial[dutiful] daughter/chaste woman. The description of the women in the discourse of the filial duty/chastity was more and more mystified in order to embody the ideal character that is not exist actually, and went to be closed in the meaning that women bereft of her husband are always forced to live isolated and required give up their lives at every moments in threatening their fidelity.
