교과서 수록본 「오늘이」의 비판적 검토

국문 초록

본고는 서사무가로는 처음으로 초등학교 국어 교과서에 수록된 「오늘이」와 그동안 출간된 어린이용 각색 판본들을 비교하여 채록본이 지닌 옛이야기로서의 가치와 정신을 제대로 전승하고 있는지를 살펴, 가장 온전한 판본을 고를 수 있는 안목을 키우고자 한다. 먼저 채록본 「원텬강본푸리」를 꼼꼼히 살펴 이 서사무가가 신녀가 되는 과정을 그린 이야기라는데 주목하고, 교과서가 신화적 인간의 성장과정으로의 여행담이 아닌 효행담으로 변화되었다는 걸 비판하였다. 이는 무속신화라는 새로운 장르로서보다는 ‘차례에 따라 이야기를 간추리는 능력’에 걸맞은 기능적 목표에 도달하기 위한 텍스트 이상이 되지 못했기 때문이다. 또한 각색 판본들과의 차이점을 채록본과 견주면서 달라진 모티프의 의미를 따져보았다. 연꽃나무는 ‘나무’라는 명칭, ‘연못가’라는 서식처, ‘3월’이라는 개화시기, 나무 형태 등으로 보아 목련의 가능성을 제시하였고, 텬하대사 역시 이 무속신화가 제주도의 것이며, 제주도는 뱀 신앙이 발달한 곳이라는 걸 생각할 때 이무기보다는 뱀, 구렁이로 표기하는 것이 바람직하다고 주장하였다. 특히 대부분의 어린이용 판본이 오늘이의 원천강 문 앞 통곡 장면을 생략하거나 대폭 줄이는 것은 통곡이 한 인간의 완성에서 심리적인 중요한 과정이라는 점에서 바람직하지 않다 밝히고, 여러 판본이 신녀가 된 오늘이가 지상에서 제 역할이 있음에도 하늘에 올라가는 것으로 서사를 끝맺음하는 것 역시 인간과 신 사이의 거리감이 없었던 우리의 신화적 세계관에 비추어 적절하지 않은 것임을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

This writing is to develop people’s ability to choose the best book, so this was written considering if 「O-Neul-e」, which is contained in elementary students’ Korean textbooks as a shamans’ song for the first time, and other adapted books for children are passing on traditional values well. After studying 「Wontyeongangbonfuri」 carefully, we noticed that this shamans’ song described the process of becoming a female possessed shaman. We especially focused on the fact that textbooks have changed a mythical development story into a filial behavior one. It is underestimated because it is nothing more than a text to achieve a functional goal of summarizing stories in time orders, rather than a new genre as a shamanism myth. We also tried to figure out the changed meanings of motives, comparing recordings with adapted ones. As far as a lotus tree, it seems to represent the possibility of a magnolia when the title of ‘tree’, the habitat of ‘pond’, and the flowering season of March are considered together. Furthermore, Tyeonha, a Buddhist priest said that this shamanistic myth originated from Jeju island, and snakes or big serpents are better choices rather than Imoogi, in respect that Jeju island is famous for religious belief in snakes. In other aspects, we criticized the adapted books for children in that they have left out or reduced the wailing scene in ‘O-Neul-e’. As wailing is considered as an important part of becoming a complete man in psychological aspects, we concluded the change was not desirable. The adaptation that O-Neul-e goes up to the sky leaving behind roles is also considered bad, compared to our mythical view in which there is little sense of distance between man and gods.
