삶의 만족감과 사회적 자본

국문 초록

본 연구는 주관적 만족감 차원의 삶의 질과 사회적 자본의 관계를 실증적으로 규명한 것이다. 삶의 질과 사회적 자본은 각각 지난 30여 년 동안 사회과학 전반에 걸쳐 매우 중요한 주제였고, 기존연구들에서도 양자의 인과관계를 시사하는 많은 발견과 논리가 있었다. 지금까지의 실증적 연구들은 만족스러운 삶, 높은 수준의 삶의 질이 사회적 자본의 영향으로 인해 가능해 짐을 보여주고 있다. 그러나 전반적인 삶의 질의 수준과 사회적 자본을 직접 연결시킨 연구는 별로 찾아볼 수 없다. 이러한 문제의식에서 본 연구는 사회적 자본을 구체적으로 시민적 참여, 신뢰, 사회적 자원의 세 가지로 구분하여 정의하고, 사회적 자본 변수들이 삶의 만족감에 끼치는 영향을 확인하였다. 그 결과를 보면, 첫째, 특히 자원 수혜 메커니즘의 전형이라고 할 있는 사회적 자원망은 상대적으로 잘 발달되어 있는 반면, 지역사회단체에의 참여도가 상당히 낮고, 공적 신뢰의 수준이 매우 낮은 수준에 머물러 있음이 드러난다. 둘째로 그럼에도 불구하고 사회적 자본이 삶의 질에 대해 유의미한 영향력을 발휘하고 있었다. 본 연구로부터 삶의 질의 제고를 위해서 도출할 수 있는 함의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 지역사회의 발전의 추진주체는 지역의 사회단체의 활성화를 위해 그리고 그 단체에 대한 시민들의 참여를 위해 적극 지원을 제공해야 할 것이다. 이러한 관점에서 시민성 교육의 중요성은 아무리 강조해도 지나침이 없을 것이다. 둘째로 공적 신뢰의 제고를 위해 투명한 정부의 운영과 시민사회단체와의 파트너십 제고를 강력하게 추진하여야 한다. 일반적으로 서구사회의 발전은 공적 신뢰가 사적 신뢰를 대체해 가는 과정이자 동시에 폐쇄적인 사적 네트워크가 와해되는 과정으로 평가된다. 사적 신뢰가 공적 신뢰로 이행되어야 만이 진정한 사회발전이 이루어질 것이다.

영문 초록

This study investigates the relationship between the quality of life and social capital. Both have been among the most important subjects in the social science fields during the last 30 years. Previous research has found a strong correlation between the two. To date, empirical outcomes have shown that social capital exerted a positive impact upon employment, emotional stability, local autonomy and democracy, and solving social problems. These results confirmed the ability of social capital to act as a spur to a more satisfactory life and provide a higher quality of life. I have defined social capital as a combination of civic participation, trust, and social resource, and inserted them into the regression equation to analyze the relationship. As a control for this analysis, I also added equations of variables such as socio-economic status like income and education, health status like subjective judgment on physical health and psycho-somatic response, and other family-demographic factors like gender, age, marriage status, residential area, and parents' relationship during childhood. After controlling for the socio-economic status, health status, and family-demographic variables, social capital variables all had statistically significant effects on the subjective satisfaction with life. However, the levels of trust and civic (or public interest oriented) participation were lower than desired. These findings present two implications. First, the principal agents of community development should exert a more serious effort in supporting the growth of civic organizations. Education for civil society is the key option to achieve this. Second, to improve public trust, we need to foster a partnership between local governments and civic organizations. Generally, the development of western society is regarded as the process of replacing private trust by public trust and the decline of closed private networks.
